Luke Sawicki and Jenna Dvorak win Jack Swartz Award in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin for the fall of 2019-20; 79 student-athletes win academic all-conference honors

Jack Swartz Fall 2019
Jenna Dvorak (left) and Luke Sawicki (right) were the winners of the
Jack Swartz Award in the CCIW for the fall of 2019.

Senior linebacker Luke Sawicki (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) and junior defender Jenna Dvorak (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) were named the winners of the Jack Swartz Award in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin for the fall sports season of 2019-20.

Both athletes had contributions on the defensive side of action in their respective sports. Sawicki was a big reason why the Viking football team finished 6-4 for the school's first winning season since 2010 and Dvorak helped the women's soccer team to a 10-4-3 overall record and a berth in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Tournament's championship game.

There were a total of 79  Augustana student-athletes who were named academic all-conference honorees during the fall season, which included the sports of football, volleyball, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's cross country, women's cross country, women's golf and women's tennis.

The Jack Swartz Award is given to one male and one female athlete at the end of each athletic season. The honor is given by the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin and each of the nine schools in the league are allowed to pick their own representatives. The only requirement is that the winners must earn a varsity letter in his/her sport and have a grade point average of at least 3.50. The award is named after the late Jack Swartz, who served as the Commissioner of the CCIW until his death in 1998.

Dvorak was a season-long starter (17 games) as a defender for an Augustana team that went 10-4-3 overall and advanced to the championship match of the CCIW Tournament. The Vikings allowed just 0.62 goals per 90 minutes (11 in 17 games) and that is the fourth-lowest average in the 27-year history of the program.

She was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team at the conclusion of the season.

Dvorak has actually been a two-year starter for Augustana and a year ago helped her team to a 13-3-3 mark and a 0.65 goals-against-average.

A standout in the classroom as well as on the soccer pitch, Dvorak sports a 3.98 grade point average with majors in graphic design and business administration/marketing.  She is a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (S.A.A.C.) and had participated in the athletic leadership training program offered by the office of student life (O.S.L.) at Augustana. She is also a Young Life leader where she helps interact with teams at local high schools who are interested in growing their faith.

She is the daughter of Greg and Jayme Dvorak of Elmhurst, Illinois.

Sawicki was the Vikings leading tackler for the second year in a row. He had team highs of 50 solo, 37 assisted and 87 total stops and was second on the team with 15 ½ tackles for loss. He ranked in the nation's top 50 in tackles for loss and in the top 100 with solo tackles. In CCIW play he finished second in the league in solo (45) and total (76) tackles and tied for fifth in tackles for loss (12 ½). He finished his career tied for 10th on the school's career tackles list with 228 and fourth in solos with 138. He is third in tackles for loss with 37.

A two-time all-conference selection at linebacker, he was also a second team all-region pick this fall by D3football.com. He was a semi-finalist for the Campbell Trophy that combines academic excellence and athletic prowess and he is a nominee for an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.

He was the CCIW's "Player of the Week" on September 9 after the Vikings manhandled Coe 41-3 in the season opener.

A business finance and management major with a 3.66 grade point average, Sawicki is the son of David and Doreen Sawicki of Naperville, Illinois.
