Vikings go 10-4-3 overall and 5-3 and tied for third in the CCIW; Anna Fank, Grace Sigler and Sydney Ion named all-conference; Fank all-region for third straight year; Jenna Dvorak Academic All-District
Coach
Scott Mejia's Augustana soccer outfit posted a 10-4-3 record in 2019 and finished tied for third in the CCIW with a mark of 5-3. The Vikings advanced to the championship match of the CCIW Tournament, where they fell 1-0 to Illinois Wesleyan in overtime.
A senior and three juniors collected postseason awards. For the third year in a row, senior
Anna Fank (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) was a first team All-CCIW selection and a United Soccer Coaches All-Region honoree. She was joined on the all-conference first team by junior
Grace Sigler (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.), while junior goalkeeper
Sydney Ion (Aquinas HS, La Crosse, Wis.) was named to the second team. Junior
Jenna Dvorak (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) earned CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition.
Augustana won its first four matches and eventually ran its record to 6-0-2. Sigler had a hat trick in a 9-0 season-opening win over Lawrence and senior
Lauren Muzzalupo (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) scored both goals in a 2-1 overtime win at North Park, earning CCIW Offensive Player of the Week honors.
The Vikings suffered their first loss, 1-0 at North Central on October 2 and split their next four matches before winning the final two matches of the regular season. Sigler had the only goal in a 1-0 win over Elmhurst at home on October 26 and the game winner on November 2, as Augustana rallied for a 2-1 win at Carthage that clinched a CCIW Tournament berth.
Augustana opened CCIW Tournament play at sixth-ranked and top-seeded Wheaton. After 110 minutes, the teams' semifinal match was tied 0-0, necessitating penalty kicks. After each side converted its first two tries, an Ion save opened the door for the Vikings, who took advantage and captured the shootout 4-2 to advance to the title match. Unfortunately, Illinois Wesleyan scored 18 seconds into overtime to win 1-0 and earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Sigler led Augustana with nine goals and 21 points this year. Muzzalupo finished second on the team in points (12) and assists (four) and third in goals (four). Freshman
Maeve Sheridan (Mother McAuley HS, Chicago, Ill.) was second with five goals and added an assist for 11 points. Senior
Allison Harvey (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) led the Vikings with five assists.
Keying a defense that allowed just 0.62 goals per 90 minutes—the fourth-lowest average in the 27-year history of the program—were seniors
Anna Fank (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.),
Hannah Rossi (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.) and Harvey, junior
Jenna Dvorak (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) and freshmen
Molly Fank (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) and
Abbey Kramer (Crystal Lake Central HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.).
Ion finished the year with a record of 9-4-3 in 1437 minutes in goal. Her 0.69 goals against average is fifth-best in a single season at Augustana and her .859 save percentage ranks sixth. She'll enter her senior season in the Vikings' career top ten in GAA (0.85—4th), save percentage (.831—5th), wins (25—6th) and saves (197—7th).
