WAUKESHA, Wis. – Seth Smith spun a complete-game two-hitter Friday to lead Carroll to a 5-1 win over Augustana at Frame Park. The Vikings fell to 24-13-1 on the season and 13-9 in the CCIW, while the Pioneers improved to 15-23 overall and 7-15 in the league.
Junior Nick Kirk drove in Augustana's
only run in a 5-1 loss at Carroll Friday.
Smith set Augustana down in the top of the first, coaxing a double-play grounder to end the inning, and his teammates gave him a pair of runs in the bottom half. Brad Vosters drew a one-out walk from Viking starter
Mike Powers (Benet Academy, Westmont, Ill.) and moved to third on Mathew Putman's single to right. Dylan Callahan's infield hit scored Vosters and one out later, Alex Kermendy doubled to left, plating Putman to make it 2-0.
Augustana threatened in the fifth, but Smith worked around two walks and an error to leave the bags full of Vikings.
Carroll extended the lead to 4-0 with two runs in the sixth. The first scored on a double-play grounder and the second on a Josh Kolb single, which knocked out Powers in favor of
Josh Chamberlain (Legacy HS, Thornton, Colo.).
Smith took a no-hitter into the eighth, but with two outs, senior
Tyler Nunez (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.) broke it up with a single to left. The right-hander retired
Ryan Grannemann (McHenry West HS, McHenry, Ill.) to end the inning. A Kermendy double and T.J. Pfaffle's RBI single in the bottom half made it 5-0.
Augustana scratched out its lone run in the top of the ninth.
Jake Huber (Lockport HS, Homer Glen, Ill.) drew a leadoff walk. Another to freshman
Matt Helms (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) moved pinch-runner
Josh Barker (Windsor HS, Severance, Colo.) to second and he scored on
Nick Kirk's (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) two-out single to right. However, Smith retired
Nick Mosele (University HS, Bloomington, Ill.) on strikes to finish off the complete game.
Smith walked seven and fanned seven on the way to his third win in eight decisions this year. Powers (1-2) went 5 2/3 innings and suffered the loss.
Kermendy had three of the Pioneers' 15 hits.
The teams are scheduled to wrap up the regular season on Saturday, May 4 with a noon doubleheader at Frame Park.
