Men’s basketball announces 2019 recruiting class

announced the Vikings' 11-player 2019 recruiting class.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Following a 26-4 season, which included a fifth consecutive CCIW championship, Augustana men's basketball Head Coach Grey Giovanine and his staff have announced the program's 2019 recruiting class. It consists of seven incoming freshmen and a pair of junior college transfers. "We needed a quality, deep class to continue to keep the program where it is today, and I believe we got it," said Giovanine. "This group has outstanding players at every position and great potential for development."
 
Cameron Bartmann is a 6' 10", 245-pound center from St. Rita High School in Chicago, Illinois. He was a four-year letter winner and helped lead the Mustangs to a 23-9 record this past season.
 
Justin Bottorff, a 6' 7", 210-pound forward, joins the Vikings with three seasons of eligibility after a year at John Wood Community College in Quincy, Illinois. He was a four-year letter winner at Quincy Notre Dame High School, where he earned second team All-State honors from both the Associated Press and IBCA as a senior. During his senior season of 2016-17, he averaged 17.6 points and 6.1 rebounds per game for a Raider squad that finished 28-3. He was a first team All-Area selection by the Quincy Herald Whig and in addition to his AP and IBCA All-State honors, was named All-State honorable mention by the Champaign News Gazette. This past season, he averaged 6.6 points and 5.2 rebounds to help lead John Wood to a 21-15 record and a fifth-place finish at the NJCAA Division II National Tournament.
 
Daniel Carr, a 6' 9", 230-pound center comes to Augustana from Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora, Colorado—the same school that produced Viking All-American Nolan Ebel. Carr was a consensus All-State selection for the Raiders this year. He earned second team honors in 5A—Colorado's highest classification—from the CHSAA and was one of just 10 players named to Basketball Colorado's All-5A team. He averaged 19.8 points and 11.4 rebounds per game this year for a 15-9 Regis Jesuit outfit that captured the Continental League championship with a 9-1 mark. He shot .499 from the floor, including .344 from three-point range, and .814 from the foul line. His 273 rebounds were a school single-season record.
 
Carter Duwa, a 6', 165-pound guard from Pleasant Valley High School in Bettendorf, Iowa is the son of Augustana assistant coach Dallas Duwa. He averaged a team-high 14.3 points per game and shot .374 from three-point range for a 15-8 Spartan outfit this year on his way to first team All-Mississippi Athletic Conference honors and second team All-Metro recognition from the Quad City Times. He was also selected as MVP of the Iowa-Illinois Senior All-Star Game held at Carver Center. His .935 mark from the free throw line as a junior is a Pleasant Valley school record.
 
Matt Hanushewsky is a 5' 10", 165-pound guard from Hersey High School in Arlington Heights, Illinois. The two-time All-Mid-Suburban League performer averaged 8.2 points per game this year and shot .391 from beyond the arc. He led the Huskies with 100 assists and earned All-Area honorable mention from the Daily Herald and Pioneer Press.
 
Jack McDonald, a 5' 11", 165-pound guard from Geneva High School in Geneva, Illinois, finished 15th in this year's Mr. Basketball voting and was a consensus All-State selection. He was named to the Sun Times' second team and to the IBCA's third team, earned special mention from the Champaign News Gazette and honorable mention from the Associated Press. He averaged 16.4 points and 5.7 assists per game on his way to Area Player of the Year honors from the Daily Herald and Kane County Chronicle. The Wheeling Hardwood Classic MVP and first-ever DuKane Conference Player of the Year led Geneva to a 32-2 record this year.
 
Nate Ortiz is a 6' 3", 178-pound wing from St. Charles East High School in St. Charles, Illinois. He was the Saints' leading scorer this year at 14.8 points per game. He drilled a team-high 73 three-pointers while shooting at a .372 rate and converted .851 at the foul line. He was a first team All-DuKane Conference selection and earned All-Area recognition from the Daily Herald, Kane County Chronicle and Elgin Courier News. He earned All-State special mention from the IBCA.
 
Jacob Pauley, a 6' 4", 185-pound wing from Geneseo High School in Geneseo, Illinois, comes to the Vikings after two seasons at Black Hawk College in Moline, Illinois. He averaged a team-high 13.9 points and 4.4 rebounds per game for the Braves this year and was Black Hawk's top three-point threat, hitting 49 of 140 for 35 percent. He was an NJCAA Division II 2nd team All-Region honoree. Pauley averaged 13.5 points and 4.1 rebounds per game as a senior at Geneseo in 2016-17. He was the Maple Leafs' MVP as well as a first team All-Northern Illinois Big 12 selection. In addition, he was named to All-Western Illinois and Metro All-Star first teams by the Quad City Times and Dispatch/Argus, respectively.
 
Luther Taylor is a 6' 4", 185-pound wing from Whitfield School in St. Louis, Missouri. The four-year letter winner and three-time All-District selection finished his career with 1,077 points and 780 rebounds. He helped the Warriors to three district championships and two state final four appearances. He averaged 15.0 points per game for a 20-9 Whitfield outfit this past year.
