Sophomore Mitchell Owens had two hits
and a run scored Friday, but Augustana
dropped a 4-2 decision to North Park at
the CCIW Tournament in Carol Stream,
Illinois.
CAROL STREAM, Ill. – Anthony DiNardo singled in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning Friday and Tyler Banks threw four scoreless frames out of the bullpen, as North Park defeated Augustana 4-2 in CCIW Tournament play at Lee Pfund Stadium. The Vikings' season came to an end with a record of 26-15-1, while NPU advanced with a 24-17 mark.
North Park got to Augustana starter
Matt Hoban (Monarch HS, Westminster, Colo.) for a pair of runs in the third. Justin Woolbright led off with a single and eventually scored on an error. Jake Reinhardt's infield hit plated Niko Buck with the second run.
Sophomore
Mitchell Owens (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) doubled with one out in the fourth and scored on
Drew Davis' (Illini Bluffs HS, Mapleton, Ill.) single to pull Augustana to within a run. Coach
Greg Wallace's club tied it in the top of the sixth. Freshman
Matt Helms (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) had a leadoff single and scored on
Nick Mosele's (University HS, Bloomington, Ill.) sacrifice fly to right.
NPU answered in the bottom of the sixth. Cullen Gilbertson led off with a double and moved to third on a Ranko Stevanovic single. DiNardo then singled to left on an 0-1 Hoban offering, scoring Gilbertson with the go-ahead run.
North Park added an insurance run in the seventh on a Reinhardt RBI single.
Banks, who relieved starter Matt Pizur two batters into the sixth, limited Augustana to one hit and no runs in his four innings. He walked two to start the ninth, but pitched around them to finish off his seventh win in 10 decisions this year.
Hoban went six-plus innings and gave up nine hits and four runs (three earned). He walked none and struck out two, falling to 2-4 with the loss. Sophomore
John Hayes (Cherry Creek HS, Greenwood Village, Colo.) finished up with two scoreless frames.
Owens and junior
Sam Beyer (Legend HS, Parker, Colo.) each had two of Augustana's nine hits. Reinhardt and DiNardo each had two hits for North Park.
