Tommy Angelos picked up the win against Dubuque after allowing just five
goals and stopping 10 shots.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – A run of six straight goals in the third period and partway through the fourth proved to be a huge reason why Augustana ran away with a 13-5 victory over Dubuque on Wednesday, April 3 at Thorson-Lucken Field. It was the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin opener for both clubs and head coach Dan Torie's Vikings broke things open just after intermission.

Augustana led 7-4 at halftime and the Spartans had gained some momentum with a Jake Herman goal just three seconds before the halftime buzzer. Herman's goal came off an assist from Gavin Hughes.

The Vikings took charge in the decisive third 15 minute section of the game with senior Erick Krall (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) starting things off with a goal at 12:59 off an assist from sophomore Joey Kreis (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.). That started a 6-0 run by Augustana that effectively ended the game.

Freshman Travis Hastings (Englewood HS, Littleton, Colo.) scored at 10:45 with sophomore Matthew Lampasona (Oak Forest HS, Oak Forest, Ill.) collecting the assist. Senior Jason Van Dyck (Crystal Lake South HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) tallied less than a minute later (10:03) off a feed from sophomore Trever Moore (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.).  That made the score 10-4.

Freshman Mark Teschke (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) scored unassisted at 6:57 to bump the margin to 11-4 and sophomore Jack Preston (Morton HS, Morton, Ill.) scored off an assist from Lampasona at 3:59 to make it 12-4. That closed out the 5-0 third quarter and the Vikings opened the fourth quarter with a goal from sophomore Shane Forsythe (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) unassisted to make it 13-4 with 9:32 left in the game.

Dubuque scored a goal in the final minute when Tanner Weis hit the nets unassisted to account for the final score.

Teschke got Augustana on the board first with a goal less than two minutes (13:33) into the game off an assist from Van Dyck. Dubuque scored the next two goals before Lampasona tied things up with a goal at 10:15 off an assist by senior Lee Whorwell (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.). Whorwell scored in the final minute of the first quarter (:57) and Lampasona beat the first quarter buzzed (:03) to make it 4-2 in favor of the Vikings after one stanza.

In the second quarter the Vikings got goals from junior William Reece (Hudson HS, Hudson, Wis.) off an assist from Lampasona, Hastings and Whorwell. Teschke assisted on Hastings goal and Forsythe on the goal by Whorwell.

The Vikings held a commanding 51-32 lead in shots and an equally large 49-29 advantage in ground balls. Freshman John Calabrese (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) won 12 of 18 face-offs to give Augustana an advantage starting each new possession.

Hastings, Whorwell, Teschke and Lampasona all had two goals and Lampasona added three assists.

Junior goal keeper Tommy Angelos (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) went the distance in goal and picked up the victory. He allowed just five goals and had 10 saves.

The Vikings will host Whittier on Friday, April 5 at Thorson-Lucken Field with the opening face-off at 5:00 p.m.

Augustana is now 6-5 overall and has won four straight while Dubuque falls to 4-6.
