NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Augustana wrapped up the 2019 season Sunday, dropping both ends of a doubleheader to North Central at Shanower Family Field. The Vikings fell 11-3 in the opener and 5-4 in the nightcap to finish the year 18-20 overall and 7-9 in the CCIW. The Cardinals improved to 26-12 on the year and 10-6 in the conference.

 

NORTH CENTRAL 11, AUGUSTANA 3
 
The hosts exploded for 10 runs in the fifth and sixth innings to claim game one.
 
Rachel Belletini's RBI single in the bottom of the first put North Central on top 1-0.
 
Augustana took the lead with two runs in the top of the third. Molly Wrenn (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) and Dina Falk (Lake Park HS, Bloomingdale, Ill.) had consecutive one-out singles and Taylor Belo (Algonquin HS, Jacobs, Ill.) loaded the bases with a bunt single. Carly Wilson (Johnsburg HS, Ringwood, Ill.) followed with a two-run double to right center.
 
The Cardinals got to Viking starter Kelcie Fredrickson (Fisher HS, Foosland, Ill.) in the fifth. Jaime Smith knocked in a run with a single to tie it and Samantha Gadomski's two-run single gave North Central the lead. A bases-loaded walk to Lisa Harrington pushed across the final run of the frame to make it 5-2.
 
Singles by Alyssa Klahn (Lincoln-Way Central HS, New Lenox, Ill.), Haley Ruch (Lincoln-Way North HS, Frankfort, Ill.) and Wrenn produced an Augustana run in the top of the sixth, but the hosts answered with six in the bottom half to end the game an inning early. Breanna Adams had a two-run single and another by Molly Cann ended the contest.
 
Fredrickson gave up five runs in 4 1/3 innings and suffered the loss, falling to 6-7 on the year. Adams (9-6) went the distance for the Cardinals.
 
Wilson and Klahn paced the Augustana offense with two hits each.
 
NORTH CENTRAL 5, AUGUSTANA 4
 
A four-run fifth inning was the key for North Central in game two.
 
Each team scored a run in the third. In the top half, Belletini's RBI single gave the hosts the lead, but Viking starter Cecelia Peine (Holt HS, Wentzville, Mo.) avoided further damage, leaving two runners stranded. Falk and Belo had back-to-back triples in the bottom half to tie it.
 
Cann led off the fourth with a double and Belletini singled her in with the go-ahead run. Taylor Clugston, Smith and Adams added RBI singles to extend the Cardinal lead to 5-1.
 
Falk scored an unearned run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth and Augustana plated two in the sixth. Marissa Catalano (Lake Park HS, Medinah, Ill.) walked with two outs and moved to second on a Fredrickson single. Falk tripled them both in to get the Vikings to within a run, but Gianna Corban got the final out to keep the lead.
 
Corban pitched around a Klahn double in the seventh to finish off the complete game. She scattered nine hits, walked two and fanned 10 to improve to 12-6 with the win.
 
Peine (4-6) went four innings before freshman Ashley Dehmlow (McHenry West HS, Spring Grove, Ill.) finished up with three scoreless frames.
 
Falk, Belo and Klahn each had two hits for Augustana and Clugston led North Central with three.
