ELMHURST, Ill. – Elmhurst took control with four consecutive second-half goals Saturday and went on to defeat Augustana 12-8 at Langhorst Field in the regular season finale for both teams. The Vikings dropped to 8-9 overall and 3-3 in the CCIW, while the Bluejays improved to 10-5 on the season and 5-1 in the league.

The hosts led just 5-4 after a
Shane Forsythe (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) goal at 11:03 of the third quarter, but Dan O'Connell scored twice as Elmhurst responded with four straight goals over the next 16 minutes. His tally at 10:20 of the fourth gave the Bluejays a 9-4 advantage.
Forsythe assisted on man-up goals by
Lee Whorwell (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) and
Trever Moore (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) and, after Cullen Nordeman scored for Elmhurst,
Matthew Lampasona (Oak Forest HS, Oak Forest, Ill.) and
Jason Van Dyck (Crystal Lake South HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) found the net to pull Augustana to within 10-8 with 5:14 to play. However, Carter Meyer won the faceoff following Van Dyck's goal and went straight in for the score and an 11-8 Bluejay lead. Andrew Frerich scored with 4:04 to play to account for the final.
Mac Harden got Elmhurst on the board first at 9:41 of the first quarter and
Mark Teschke (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) answered at the 7:58 mark. The teams continued to trade goals until Andrew Lentz's tally 30 seconds before halftime gave the Bluejays a 5-3 lead at intermission.
Teschke and Moore led the Vikings with two goals apiece and Forsythe had a goal and two assists. Van Dyck won three of five faceoffs. Junior goalie
Tommy Angelos (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) recorded 14 saves and snared a team-high five ground balls.
Harden led Elmhurst with four goals. Meyer won 18 of 24 faceoffs and grabbed 13 ground balls and goalie Harry Meredith stopped a dozen Augustana shots.
Each team took 39 shots in the contest, with the Vikings putting 20 on cage to 26 for the Bluejays. Elmhurst had a 50-20 edge in ground balls, claimed 18 of 24 faceoffs and committed 22 turnovers to 24 for Augustana.
