Wheaton arms end Vikings' streak

CAROL STREAM, Ill. – Wheaton got outstanding efforts from four pitchers Friday on its way to a doubleheader sweep of Augustana at Lee Pfund Stadium. The losses ended a 10-game winning streak for the Vikings, who dropped to 22-7-1 overall and 11-3 in the CCIW. The Thunder improved to 20-10 overall and 10-7 in the league. The teams will complete their series with a single game on Saturday, April 20.

WHEATON 1, AUGUSTANA 0

Wheaton's Michael McCraith silenced the Augustana bats in the opener, limiting the Vikings to two hits while fanning 10 without a walk in a dominant complete-game outing.

The Thunder scored the game's only run in the bottom of the fourth. Brett Albaugh drew a one-out walk from Augustana starter Matt Hoban (Monarch HS, Westminster, Colo.). After a Jesse Welch double and a walk to Clay Morrison loaded the bases, Sam Reichert lifted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Albaugh.

The only Vikings to reach in the contest were Mitchell Owens (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.), who led off the second with a double, and Tyler Nunez (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.), who singled leading off the seventh.

McCraith's performance foiled an excellent effort from Hoban and reliever Josh Chamberlain (Legacy HS, Thornton, Colo.). Hoban allowed just four hits and a run in six innings. He walked one and struck out four, but fell to 2-2 with the loss. Chamberlain threw two hitless innings.

WHEATON 4, AUGUSTANA 3

Trailing 3-2, the Thunder tied the nightcap on Albaugh's RBI double in the seventh and took the lead on a Joel Pierce sacrifice fly in the eighth. David Sofelt closed things out with a 1-2-3 ninth, earning his second save of the year.

The hosts took a 1-0 in the bottom of the first. Nick Mailman drew a leadoff walk from Augustana starter Max Mead (Lakewood HS, Lakewood, Colo.) and eventually scored on Welch's single to right.

The Vikings took a 3-1 lead with two runs in the third and one in the fourth. Ryan Kairis (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) and Ryan Grannemann (McHenry West HS, McHenry, Ill.) scored on Owens' double in the third and Griffen Pschigoda (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) was hit by a pitch leading off the fourth and scored on a Sam Beyer (Legend HS, Parker, Colo.) two-bagger.

Jacob Garrity's RBI single in the bottom of the fourth drew Wheaton to within 3-2.

Coach Greg Wallace used five hurlers, with the first four surrendering a run each. Sophomore Alec Michaelson (Willowbrook HS, Lombard, Ill.) had the longest stint, going 3 1/3 innings. Chamberlain (2-1) suffered the loss.

Kairis and Pschigoda each had two hits.

Caleb Selk (3-3) relieved starter Sam Arnold in the eighth and earned the win. Arnold gave up seven hits and three runs, walking one and fanning six in seven innings of work.
