AUGUSTANA 15, CARTHAGE 14

The opener went to the ninth tied at 11-11, but Carthage got to bullpen ace John Hayes (Cherry Creek HS, Greenwood Village, Colo.) for three runs in the top half. The Red Men took the lead on Myles Farley's RBI double and added insurance runs on Luke Beckman's RBI single and a bases-loaded walk to Clayton Taylor.

In the bottom half, Nick Mosele (University HS, Bloomington, Ill.) touched Brian Polanski for a leadoff single. After Tyler Nunez (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.) doubled him to third one out later, Mosele scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 14-12. Ryan Grannemann (McHenry West HS, McHenry, Ill.) walked with two outs and consecutive RBI singles by Mitchell Owens (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) and Gunnar Haskins (Alleman HS, Moline, Ill.) tied it. Drew Davis (Illini Bluffs HS, Mapleton, Ill.) later reached on an error with Owens coming home with the game-winner.

Carthage jumped in front 5-0 after an inning and a half, but Matt Helms (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) had a two-run single in a five-run Viking third that tied it.

The Red Men's second four-run frame put them back on top 9-5 after three and a half, but Augustana answered with two in the fourth and three in the fifth to go up 10-9. Haskins had a two-run single in the fourth and Davis led off the fifth with a triple.

The visitors retook the lead with two in the top of the sixth before a Granneman sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh tied it at 11-11.

Ryan Kairis (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) finished 4-for-6 with four runs scored. Nunez scored three times and Haskins and Granneman each knocked in three runs. Hayes picked up the win to move to 5-1 on the season. Josh Chamberlain (Legacy HS, Thornton, Colo.) was the only one of four Viking hurlers to go unscored upon. He went 2 2/3 innings prior to Hayes.

Ben Levicki had five of Carthage's 22 hits. Polanski dropped his first decision of the season

AUGUSTANA 8, CARTHAGE 7

Nursing a 7-4 lead in the nightcap, Red Men relievers walked the bases full with one out in the bottom of the ninth. With two outs, Davis singled to left, scoring  pinch runner Josh Barker (Windsor HS, Severence, Colo.) and Owens to make it 7-6. After an infield hit by Mosele, Nick Kirk (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) scored the tying run on a wild pitch. Kairis completed the comeback, pulling a single to right that plated Davis with the winning run.

Carthage scored three in the top of the first and Augustana played from behind for the rest of the game. The Vikings scored two in the bottom of the first. The Red Men tallied one in the third and Augustana got it back on an Owens sacrifice fly in the fifth that cut the deficit to 4-3.

Ryan Kramer's two-run single was the big hit in a three-run Red Men sixth. The Vikings pulled to within 7-4 on a bases-loaded walk to Mosele in the eighth, setting the stage for their rally in the ninth.

Kairis again went 4-for-6 at the plate, while Haskins finished 3-for-4. Bryson Prusator (Mendota HS, Mendota, Ill.) went the final 3 1/3 innings to earn his second win in as many decisions this year. Clark Hendricks took the loss.
