Augustana drops 20-10 decision at Chicago

CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Chicago scored seven of the first eight goals in the second half Wednesday on its way to a 20-10 win over Augustana at Stagg Field. The Vikings fell to 4-8 on the season and 0-3 in the CCIW, while the Maroons improved to 11-1 overall and 3-0 in the league.

an assist Wednesday in a 20-10 setback
at Chicago.
 

After Chicago jumped on top 3-1, Christina McCabe (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) and Bailey Aasen (Park HS, Cottage Grove, Minn.) took turns assisting on each other's goal as Augustana tied it at 3-3 with 16:24 left in the first half.
 
Karina Schulze scored the first two of three straight Maroon goals on free position shots, but Aasen and Kathryn Hettiger (Carmel HS, Carmel, Ind.) answered with free position goals of their own. After Schulze and Aasen swapped goals again, the Vikings trailed just 7-6 at the three-minute mark of the first half.
 
Chicago tallied three goals in less than a minute and a half to go up 10-6 before Emily Lucnik (Schaumburg HS, Schaumburg, Ill.) beat the halftime buzzer with an assist from Carla Bennett (Marian Catholic HS, South Holland, Ill.) to pull Augustana to within 10-7 at intermission.
 
Schulze scored three times as the Maroons broke the game open with a 7-1 run to start the second half. Aasen scored the Vikings' only goal during that stretch off another Bennett assist.
 
McCabe scored the visitors' final two goals with a free position, power play tally at the 12:24 mark and an unassisted goal with 1:52 to play.
 
Aasen and McCabe each finished with four goals and an assist, while Schulze found the net eight times for Chicago. Lucnik and Elizabeth Cook (Minooka HS, Joliet, Ill.) led Augustana with three ground balls each and Bennett controlled nine draws in addition to her two assists.
 
Viking goalie Courtney Veitch (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) made 10 saves, while her Maroon counterpart, Honor Crandell stopped five Augustana shots.
 
The hosts finished with advantages of 39-17 in shots, 24-13 in ground balls and 17-14 in draw controls. The Vikings committed 22 turnovers to 12 for Chicago.
 
Next up for Augustana is a 4:00 p.m. contest versus Carroll on Saturday, April 13 at Thorson-Lucken Field.
