MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Jacob Simy had 12 kills Friday to lead 14th-ranked Milwaukee School of Engineering to a 3-0 victory over Augustana at Hotchkin Arena. The Vikings dropped to 7-10 on the season—with seven of those losses coming to ranked opponents—while the Raiders improved to 12-6.
Sophomore Ryan Hirschel had six kills
and 15 assists Friday in Augustana's
three-set loss at MSOE.
Jason Szara (Lincoln-Way East HS, Frankfort, Ill.) had two kills as Augustana jumped to a 7-3 lead in the first set. MSOE came back to achieve ties at 11, 12 and 13, but the Vikings claimed the next four points to go up 17-13. They still led 19-16 after another Szara kill, but Simy had a kill and two blocks as the Raiders went on a 6-0 run to take their first lead and a block by Ben Pung and Spencer Mueller eventually finished off a 25-21 MSOE win.
A 6-2 Raider run broke open a close game two. Augustana trailed just 11-9 after a
Luis Zavala (Lincoln-Way East HS, Frankfort, Ill.) kill, but Jacob Christensen had two kills and a block as the hosts took six of the next eight points for a 17-11 lead. A Simy kill gave MSOE set point in a 25-16 win.
In game three, Spencer Mueller had two kills as the Raiders took a 12-5 lead. Kills by
Caleb Minnis (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.),
Ryan Hirschel (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) and
Justin Murphy (Glenbard South HS, Lombard, Ill.) helped the Vikings come back to forge ties at 13,14, 15 and 16, but an 8-2 spurt gave the Raiders a comfortable lead and an Augustana service error gave them match point in a 25-19 win.
Szara led the Vikings with seven kills and 10 digs. Hirschel hit .417, with six kills on 12 swings, and dished out a team-high 15 assists. Minnis was in on two blocks.
Augustana is back in action on Saturday, March 9, taking on North Park in a non-conference match in Chicago, Illinois beginning at 3:00 p.m.
