Fast start keys 13-10 win over Hendrix


GEORGETOWN, Texas – Augustana bolted to a 9-3 halftime lead Sunday and held on for a 13-10 season-opening win over Hendrix in a neutral-site game played at Southwestern University. The Warriors, playing their fourth game of the year, fell to 2-2.

Freshman Kathryn Hettiger (Carmel HS, Carmel, Ind.) and senior Christina McCabe (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) took turns scoring as Coach C.J. Holder's Vikings jumped on top 4-0. Hettiger tallied Augustana's first and third goals, with the latter coming off an assist from senior Bailey Aasen (Park HS, Cottage Grove, Minn.).
 
Morgan Dasch scored with an assist from Alison Watanabe to get Hendrix on the board seven minutes in.
 
Hettiger and McCabe continue to trade scores for the Vikings until McCabe sandwiched a pair of free position goals around one by Dasch. The second came 2:24 before halftime and gave Augustana a 9-3 lead at intermission.
 
Watanabe and Dasch scored the first two goals of the second half, but McCabe answered with two and Hettiger one to give the Vikings a 12-5 advantage as the clock ticked under 10 minutes.
 
Dasch scored twice and Sophie Mazzaro once inside of a minute to get the Warriors to within 12-8, but Hettiger's final tally of the afternoon, at the 6:32 mark, gave her team more breathing room. Dasch scored twice in the last 5:34 to account for the final.
 
McCabe and Hettiger accounted for all 13 of Augustana's goals. McCabe's seven equaled the seventh-best single-game total in program history. She also had a pair of a assists.
 
Hettiger controlled four draws. Freshman Cassie Kruse (Hinsdale Centarl HS, Clarendon Hills, Ill.) led the Vikings with three ground balls and sophomore Elizabeth Cook (Minooka HS, Joliet, Ill.) caused four turnovers. Sophomore Courtney Veitch (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) recorded three saves in goal.
 
Dasch scored eight goals for the Warriors and goalie Alexis Truitt made six saves.
 
Holder's crew is back in action on Wednesday, February 27, taking on host Southwestern in Georgetown, Texas at 6:00 p.m.
