Freshman Gabriela Loiz scored nine points for the Vikings on Wednesday.
WHITEWATER, Wis. – A scoring draught in the second and third quarters proved to be too much for Augustana to overcome as the Vikings fell to Wisconsin-Whitewater 75-50 in non-conference women's basketball action on Wednesday, November 20 in Whitewater, Wisconsin. Head coach
Mark Beinborn's team was outscored 43-12 in the middle part of the game.
The Vikings bolted out to a 17-12 lead after one quarter as they were in control from the time freshman
Gabriela Loiz (Alleman Catholic HS, Davenport, Iowa) buried a three pointer in the game's first minute until senior
Alexis Jones (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) hit a layup with 1:12 to play in the first stanza. That gave Augustana a 17-10 lead but UW-Whitewater cut the lead to five (17-12) on a basket by Johanna Taylor with :33 left.
That basket by Taylor sparked an 11-0 run that carried through to the 6:15 mark of the second period when a layup by Becky Raeder gave the hosts a 21-17 lead. After a basket by Jones brought the Vikings back to within two (21-19) with 5:53 left, the Warhawks went on an 18-3 run to close out the half with a commanding 37-22 lead.
Things didn't get much better in the third quarter as Whitewater outscored Augustana 18-7 to build a commanding 55-29 lead heading into the final frame. In the fourth quarter the Vikings held a narrow 21-20 edge for a final score of 75-50.
Senior guard
Mia Lambert (Macomb HS, Macomb, Ill.) led Augustana in scoring with 13 points while Jones was also in double figures with 10. Jones shared the rebounding lead with junior
Justice Edell (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) with seven each. The Vikings were outrebounded by the taller Warhawks 53-39.
Raeder led UW-Whitewater in scoring with 16 points as the Warhawks moved to 3-1 on the year. Augustana is now 1-4 and will play host to Dubuque on Saturday, November 23 at 2:00 p.m. The Vikings shot just .279 from the floor (17-61) and were just .214 (6-28) from three point range.
