Senior Micah Martin had a career-high
24 points, along with 10 rebounds and
three blocked shots Saturday in
Augustana's 70-67 win over Calvin at
Carver Center.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – On a night when he became Augustana's career blocked shot leader, senior Micah Martin (Iowa City HS, Iowa City, Iowa) scored a career-high 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the 17th-ranked Vikings to a 70-67 win over Calvin Saturday at Carver Center. Coach Grey Giovanine's squad improved to 2-1 on the season, while the Knights dropped to 1-1.

Calvin led 52-48 midway through the second half when Augustana came up with two plays that swung the momentum in the Vikings' favor. First, Jarrett Tribble (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Homewood, Ill.) came up with a steal and dunk and then a Pierson Wofford (Springfield Lutheran HS, Springfield., Ill.) rebound led to a fast break, with freshman Jack McDonald (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) firing a beautiful pass to Martin, who finished with another dunk to tie it at 52-all.

There would be two more ties and the Knights twice grabbed a one-point lead, but when Wofford drained a three-pointer with 5:41 to play, Augustana had the lead (63-61) for good. McDonald fed sophomore Justin Bottorff (Quincy Notre Dame HS, Quincy, Ill.) for a bucket at the 3:00 mark that gave the hosts a 67-61 advantage, but Calvin responded, pulling within  69-67 on a Derrick DeVries jumper with 43 seconds left.

On the ensuing possession, the Vikings committed a shot clock violation with 12 seconds left, giving the Knights a chance to tie or take the lead. After a timeout, Alex Bos' trey attempt from deep on the right wing was well off the mark. Tribble grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 2.8 seconds showing on the clock. He hit the first free throw to make it 70-67, but missed the second. Calvin rebounded and called timeout with 2.3 seconds left, but out of the break, junior Jack Jelen (Bay HS, Bay Village, Ohio) tipped away a long Knight pass and time expired.

The visitors grabbed their biggest lead less than five minutes in when a Thad Shymanski three-pointer gave them a 13-4 advantage. Augustana answered with an 11-2 run to tie it at 15-all on a Bottorff putback. Martin twice gave the Vikings a seven-point lead before they eventually settled for a 36-34 advantage at the half.

Calvin scored the first eight points of the second half and went up 45-38 on a Tony DeWitte three-pointer with 16:35 to play. The second of two free throws by Wofford pulled Augustana even at 45-all at the 12:49 mark, but Emmett Warner followed with two charity tosses and the visitors would lead for the next three minutes until Tribble and Martin's back-to-back dunks.

In addition to his double-double, Martin rejected three shots, giving him 160 for his career and moving him past Adam Rue (158 from 1999-2003) as the school's career record holder. The stat has been compiled officially since the 1979-80 season. Wofford added 18 points, six rebounds and two steals and Bottorff chipped in with 10 points and six boards. Jelen finished with seven assists and no turnovers and McDonald dished out six against just two turnovers.

DeVries matched Martin's game-high 24 points and three Knights joined him in double figures.

For the game, the Vikings shot .459 from the field on 28 of 61. They were four of 15 (.267) from three-point range and 10 of 16 (.625) at the free throw line. Calvin shot .407 (22-54) from the floor, .400 (8-20) from beyond the arc and .882 (15-17) from the foul line. Augustana won the battle of the boards by a 36-35 margin and committed 10 turnovers to 15 for the Knights.

Giovanine's bunch will be back at Carver on Wednesday, November 20, hosting Loras, with tipoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
