and a touchdown and blocked a punt
for another TD Saturday in Augustana's
51-36 win at Carthage.
KENOSHA, Wis. – Senior
Bobby Jarosz (Prospect HS, Mt. Prospect, Ill.) rushed for 263 yards and a touchdown on 35 carries Saturday as Augustana wrapped up the 2019 season with a 51-36 win over Carthage at Art Keller Field. Jarosz also had a blocked punt for a touchdown as Coach
Steve Bell's squad finished 6-4 on the year and 5-4 in the CCIW. The host Red Men fell to 4-6 overall and 4-5 in the league.
After Carthage's David Collins (36 yards) and Viking
Owen Ennis (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) (19 yards) traded first-quarter field goals, the Red Men took the lead on the final play of the first period. Colton Klein hit Jovone Stricker with a 12-yard touchdown pass. Senior
Xavier Holley (Bettendorf HS, Davenport, Iowa) blocked Collins' point after try and the hosts' lead was 9-3.
The Vikings took control of the contest with 24 unanswered points in the second quarter. Senior
Zachary Fuller (St. Patrick HS, Schiller Park, Ill.) hit classmate
Tom Dolis (Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.) for a 34-yard touchdown and Ennis' kick put Augustana on top 10-9. Bell's defense forced a three-and out on Carthage's next series and on fourth down, Jarosz blocked Collins' punt and recovered in the end zone for a 17-9 lead after the extra point. A three-yard
Alek Jacobs (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) touchdown run and a 38-yard Ennis field goal gave the guests a 27-9 lead at the half.
In the third quarter, Klein sandwiched a pair of touchdown passes around a 40-yard Ennis field goal and the Red Men were within 30-22 with 3:46 left in the period. Augustana responded with a four-play, 65-yard drive capped by Jacobs' 20-yard touchdown run and the Vikings took a 37-22 advantage to the fourth.
Carthage kept the pressure on, getting another Klein-to-Stricker scoring strike and then recovering an Augustana fumble at the Viking 33-yard line. The Red Men reached the four, but on first-and-goal,
Zach Stewart (Crown Point HS, Crown Point, Ind.) wrestled the ball away from a Carthage receiver in the end zone for an interception. The Vikings took advantage, driving 65 yards in six plays, with Jarosz scoring from three yards out. Ennis' kick gave his team a 44-29 lead with 10:12 remaining.
After a Red Men three-and-out and a short punt, Augustana went 35 yards in five plays, all on the ground. Senior
Antonio Cannon (Oak Park & River Forest HS, River Forest, Ill.) did the honors, scoring from two yards out on the final carry of his career. Ennis added his sixth extra point of the game to make it 51-29 with 5:31 to play, but Alex Jarvis returned his kickoff 83 yards for a touchdown to trim the margin to 51-36 after Collins' point after. That proved to be Carthage's last gasp though, as behind the running of Jarosz and Jacobs, the Vikings were able to run out the final 5:18.
Jarosz's rushing total was the fifth-best single-game mark in the history of the Augustana program and it gave him 1,165 yards this year, ninth-most in a season for a Viking. Jacobs added 72 yards, as Augustana piled up 349 rushing yards. Fuller finished 15 of 21 passing for 221 yards and a touchdown. He closed his career second in school history in passing yards (5,927) and tied for second in touchdown passes (37). Dolis caught seven passes for a season-high 161 yards and a score.
Junior
David Lane (Civic Memorial HS, Bethalto, Ill.) led the defense with seven solo and nine total tackles. Holley had three tackles including a sack, which pushed his season totals to 13½ sacks and 19½ tackles for loss. Both of those marks are program records for years in which data is available.
This year's winning season is Augustana's first since going 6-4 in 2010. The Vikings' five CCIW wins are the most since a 5-2 league ledger in 2008.
