Sophomore Marcela Arreguin
celebrates her goal Saturday that
gave Augustana a 1-0 win over
Carroll at Thorson-Lucken Field.
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Sophomore
Marcela Arreguin (Beloit Memorial HS, Beloit, Wis.) scored in the 39th minute Saturday as Augustana bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 1-0 victory over Carroll at Thorson-Lucken Field. The Vikings improved to 7-1-2 on the year and 2-1 in the CCIW. The Pioneers dropped to 5-3-2 overall and 0-1-1 in the league.
The Pioneers outshout their hosts by a 7-4 margin in the first 32 minutes of the match. They put four on frame, but all were turned away by junior keeper
Sydney Ion (Aquinas HS, La Crosse, Wis.).
In the 39th minute, a
Karissa Gottardo (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) cross from the right side led to a loose ball in front of the Carroll goal. Arreguin came sliding in from the left side to knock it into the net for a 1-0 Augustana lead. The goal was Arreguin's second of the season and Gottardo was credited with her third assist.
Neither side would get off another shot in the first half.
After the Pioneers squeezed off the first two shots of the second half, it was the Vikings who kept the pressure on for the last 30 minutes. They took the final seven shots of the evening, putting four on goal, keeping Carroll on its heels to preserve the win.
Both Ion and her Pioneer counterpart Christina O'Block, recorded five saves.
Augustana finished with a 12-9 advantage in shots, including a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. The Pioneers took all five corners in the match. The Vikings were called for 10 fouls, to nine for Carroll and there were no cautions issued.
On Saturday, October 12, Coach
