Vikings drop 6-1 decision at North Central

Junior Chris Plantz scored Augustana's
only goal in a 6-1 setback at North
Central Wednesday.

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – North Central jumped on Augustana for five first-half goals Wednesday and cruised to a 6-1 win at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium. The Vikings dropped to 5-7-2 on the year and 2-4-1 in the CCIW, while the Cardinals improved to 11-5-1 overall and 6-2 in the conference.
 
Lukas Munchausen gave the hosts a 1-0 lead with his first goal of the season in minute five. Alexis Flores scored in the 18th minute and then assisted on Elmer Eng's goal in minute 24, as North Central went ahead 3-0. Eng's tally was his third of 2019.
 
Three minutes later, Spencer Wiese scored his fifth goal of the year off an Austin Lombardi assist. In the 41st minute, Eng assisted on a Jack Bullard's first goal of the season and the Cardinals took a 5-0 advantage to the halftime break.
 
North Central put half of its 12 shots on frame in the opening 45 minutes, compared to four of six for Augustana.
 
Flores added his team-leading 10th goal on a penalty kick in the 54th minute to wrap up the Cardinals' scoring.
 
The Vikings got on the board in the 71st minute, when junior Chris Plantz (Larkin HS, Elgin, Ill.) parlayed a Maxim Hamers (Gemeentelijk Gymnasium Hilversum, Blaricum, Netherlands) assist into his first goal of the year. The assist was the first of the season for Hamers as well.
 
North Central finished with a 17-10 edge in shots, including 8-6 in shots on goal. Augustana took three corners to two for the Cardinals and was called for 10 fouls to North Central's three. The Vikings received the only caution of the match.
 
Augustana senior keeper Jeremy Klaber (Stevenson HS, Buffalo Grove, Ill.) recorded a pair of saves, while Marco Soto had five for the hosts.
 
Coach Mick Regan's squad will close out the 2019 season on Saturday, November 2 at Carthage.
