Senior Jack McKearnan scored Augustana's goal in a
3-1 setback at Simpson Friday.
INDIANOLA, Iowa – Brendan Owings' goal off a penalty kick in the final minute of the first half sparked Simpson to a season-opening 3-1 win over Augustana Friday at Buxton Stadium. The Vikings (0-1) are back in action on Sunday, September 2, hosting Coe at Thorson-Lucken Field at 7:00 p.m.
The first half was evenly played, with Augustana getting off two shots and the Storm just one, none of which were put on frame. However, in the final seconds of the period, Augustana keeper
Jeremy Klaber (Stevenson HS, Buffalo Grove, Ill.) was issued a yellow card and Owings converted the ensuing penalty kick to put the hosts on top 1-0 at intermission.
The contest remained tight through the first 20 minutes of the second half, but Tanner Alderson and Darius Doswell tallied unassisted goals in the 66th and 69th minutes, respectively, to give the hosts some breathing room.
Senior
Jack McKearnan (Warren HS, Gurnee, Ill.) got the Vikings on the board with a goal in the 83rd minute.
Simpson finished with a 11-9 advantage in shots, including 8-3 in shots on goal, and a 6-1 edge in corners.
Klaber recorded five saves on the evening, while his Simpson counterpart, Jake Potkratz, stopped a pair of Augustana shots.
