Senior Jordyn Sundberg scored in the 109th minute Friday to
lift Augustana to a 1-0 win over Hanover at Thorson-Lucken Field.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Senior Jordyn Sundberg (Aurora Central Catholic HS, Oswego, Ill.) scored with 1:47 remaining in the second overtime Friday to lift Augustana to a 1-0 season-opening win over Hanover at Thorson-Lucken Field. The Vikings' victory avenged a road loss to the Panthers last season. Coach Scott Mejia's side is back in action on Sunday, September 2, hosting Bethel at noon.

With time winding down in the second overtime, Augustana was awarded a corner from the right side. Senior Abby Wendell's (Hersey HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) kick was boxed around in front of the Hanover goal before Sundberg fired a sliding shot past Panther keeper Amanda Carmosino to end the contest.

After being outshot 6-0 in the opening half, the Vikings were able to put more together in the second period. They outshot their guests 4-2 in the half, with their best opportunity coming on a Cameron Kekelik (Munster HS, Munster, Ind.) attempt that slid just to the left of the goal in the 84th minute.

Hanover's best shot came on Kayla Nowlin's header off a corner in the 62nd minute. Augustana keeper Sydney Ion (Aquinas HS, La Crosse, Wis.) was right there, however, recording her second of four saves on the night. She added one in each of the overtime periods.

Along with Ion, junior Anna Fank (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) and sophomore Grace Bradley-Leon (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) keyed the Viking defense.

The visitors finished with a 10-5 advantage in shots, putting four on frame to two for Augustana. The Vikings had a 5-2 edge in corners. The Panthers committed 11 fouls to eight for their hosts. Each side was issued a yellow card.
