Vikings ride fast start to win over Carroll

Senior Carter Amundsen went 3-for-5 with two doubles and three
runs scored Friday, as Augustana defeated Carroll 9-5 at
Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field.

MOLINE, Ill. – Augustana jumped in front 8-1 after four innings Friday and cruised to a 9-5 win over Carroll at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field. The Vikings improved to 24-13 on the season and12-10 in the CCIW, while the  Pioneers dropped to 21-17 overall and 8-14 in the league. The teams close out the regular season with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 5. First pitch at Swanson/Brunner is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
 
Senior Carter Amundsen's (Sheboygan South HS, Sheboygan, Wis.) leadoff double sparked a three-run Augustana first. Junior Ryan Kairis (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) followed with a bunt single and a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior John Moraski (Kewanee HS, Kewanee, Ill.) scored Amundsen with the game's first run. After a Carroll error kept the inning alive, junior Ryan Grannemann (McHenry West HS, McHenry, Ill.) came through with a two-run double to center.
 
Senior Jack Hallmark (Cherry Creek HS, Englewood, Colo.) led off the bottom of the second with an infield hit and moved to third on another Amundsen double. They scored on RBI groundouts by Kairis and Moraski, respectively, and the Vikings led 5-0 after two.
 
Dylan Callahan's one-out solo homer to center got the Pioneers on the board against Mike Powers (Benet Academy, Downers Grove, Ill.) in the top of the fourth, but Powers' teammates came right back with three in the bottom half. Hallmark drew a leadoff walk. Kairis and Amundsen added singles and Moraski logged his second sacrifice fly of the night.
 
Callahan singled in a run in the sixth to make it 8-2 before Powers ended his evening by throwing a 1-2-3 seventh.
 
Hallmark singled in Jake Huber (Lockport HS, Homer Glen, Ill.) in the bottom of the seventh. Carroll scored two in the eighth and an unearned run in the ninth to account for the final.
 
Powers gave up eight hits and two runs in seven innings. He walked none and fanned two, improving to 7-2 on the year with the win. Alex Moreland (1-3) took the loss for the Pioneers.
 
Amundsen and Kairis each went 3-for-5 at the plate. Amundsen scored three runs, while Kairis scored twice and added an RBI. Grannemann finish 2-for-3 with two RBI and Hallmark 2-for-2 with two runs scored and one knocked in. Despite going without a hit, Moraski drove in a game-high three runs.
 
Jacob Langford went 4-for-5 for Carroll.
