AUGUSTANA 7, CARTHAGE 5

Augustana jumped in front with a run in the third. Senior Carter Amundsen (Sheboygan South HS, Sheboygan, Wis.) led off with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice by classmate Jack Hallmark (Cherry Creek HS, Englewood, Colo.). Haskins knocked him in with a sacrifice fly to right.

The Red Men took the lead with a pair of unearned runs in the fourth. With two outs, a dropped foul popup gave Nick Pierce second life and he took advantage with a single to right center. Vince Schwartz followed with a homer to left center to make it 2-1 Carthage. Powers hit the next two batters, but got out of the inning by inducing a comebacker from Ben Levicki.

Senior John Moraski's (Kewanee HS, Kewanee, Ill.) two-out, bases-loaded double in the top of the fifth put the Vikings up 3-2, but the Red Men tied it in the bottom half on a Cody Phelps two-out RBI single.

In the sixth, Amundsen drew a leadoff walk and eventually tagged and scored the go-ahead run on Matt Loeffl's (Grayslake Central HS, Grayslake, Ill.) foul out to third. Haskins cleared the bases with a two-out double to right in the seventh, giving Augustana a 7-3 advantage.

Senior reliever Mitch Malone (Minooka HS, Minooka, Ill.) came on to start the eighth and limited Carthage to a run in each of the last two innings to preserve the win.

Haskins and Moraski each went 3-for-4 at the plate. Haskins drove in four runs, while Moraski scored once and knocked in a pair. Powers gave up five hits and just one earned run in seven innings of work. He issued no walks and fanned eight to earn his fifth win in six decisions this year. Reliever Owen Reith (0-1) took the loss for the Red Men.

CARTHAGE 3, AUGUSTANA 1

Carthage's Matt Willett handcuffed the Vikings on four hits in the nightcap.

The Red Men took the lead with a run off Augustana starter Vinny Rotunno (Lakes HS, Lindenhurst, Ill.) in the second.  Schwartz singled to right center with one out and eventually scored on Myles Farley's two-out single to left.

The Vikings threatened in the fourth when Willett hit two batters and walked another. However, Amundsen was cut down attempting to steal and Willett left the other two runners stranded.

The hosts added two in the fourth. Farley's double down the left field line plated Clayton Taylor and Ryan Dalton to make it 3-0. John Hayes (Cherry Creek HS, Greenwood Village, Colo.) later came out of the pen and coaxed a Phelps groundout, leaving the bags full of Red Men.

Willett didn't surrender a run until the ninth. Haskins led off with a double, but was out trying to stretch it into a triple. Loeffl followed with a single to right and eventually scored on an error. However, Willett got Clint Ugolini (Badger HS, Lake Geneva, Wis.) to ground into a fielder's choice to end the game. He allowed four hits and no earned runs, walking one and fanning five to improve to 3-1 on the season.

Rotunno (2-3) went 3 1/3 innings and took the loss. The freshman trio of Hayes, Josh Chamberlain (Legacy HS, Thornton, Colo.) and Matt Hoban (Monarch HS, Westminster, Colo.) allowed just one hit and no runs in 4 2/3 combined innings of relief.
