Vikings best Greenville in five sets

Freshman Gary Dodovich had 11 kills Friday as Augustana defeated
Greenville in five sets on the road.

GREENVILLE, Ill. – Augustana set season highs in kills and assists Friday, defeating Greenville in five sets in a Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League match at the Panthers' gym. Coach Mark Lau's squad improved to 10-16 overall and 3-5 in the conference heading into its season finale on Saturday, April 7 at Fontbonne. Greenville dropped to 10-17 on the year and 1-7 in the MCVL.
 
The Panthers fought off a pair of match points in the fourth set, taking the last four points to win 26-24 and force a fifth. Johnny Milabu had three kills in Greenville's closing run, including the game winner.
 
The hosts led 3-2 in set five, but a Gary Dodovich (St. Benedict HS, Chicago, Ill.) kill sparked a 4-0 Viking run and Augustana would lead the rest of the way. The Panthers trimmed the deficit to one on five occasions, but the Vikings claimed the last four points to end the contest with a 15-10 win. A Dylan Baum (Warrensburg-Latham HS, Decatur, Ill.) kill started the run and match point came on a Dodovich kill.
 
The teams traded 25-22 wins in the first two sets. The visitors took the lead in game one at 10-9 and held it the rest of the way. Set point came on a kill by freshman Justin Murphy (Glenbard East HS, Lombard, Ill.). A Kyle Ward kill broke a 21-all tie in set two and Milabu eventually parlayed an assist from Tanner Smith into set point for Greenville.
 
In game three, freshman Ryan Hirschel (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) set classmate Andrew Housholder (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) for a kill that broke a 10-10 tie, giving Augustana the lead for good. The Vikings extended the advantage to five (17-12) on a Jason Szara (Lincoln-Way East HS, Frankfort, Ill.) kill and matched it later at 20-15. The Panthers got within two points on three occasions, but Augustana took three of the last four points. Dodovich's kill off an assist from freshman Matthew Schiferl (Wheeling HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) closed out a 25-21 Viking win.
 
Szara finished with 14 of Augustana's season-high 62 kills and Hirschel dished out 48 of the team's 56 assists, also a season best. Baum added 13 kills and Dodovich 11. Schiferl had 11 digs and Hirschel nine and freshman Joshua Richardson (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Hazel Crest, Ill.) was in on seven blocks.
 
Milabu had a match-high 15 kills for Greenville.
