Junior Carly Wilson is congratulated after her two-run, first-inning
homer in the nightcap of Sunday's doubleheader with Illinois Wesleyan.
ROCK ISLAND, Ill.—
Carly Wilson's
(Johnsburg HS, Ringwood, Ill.) two-run, first-inning home run in Sunday's doubleheader nightcap helped lift Augustana to a 2-1 victory and a split with Illinois Wesleyan at Carver Field. The Titans took the opener 8-0. Coach
Kris Kistler's outfit wrapped up the 2018 season with a 22-16 overall record and a mark of 7-9 in the CCIW. Conference champion IWU moved to 25-9-1 on the season and 14-2 in the league.
ILLINOIS WESLEYAN 8, AUGUSTANA 0
Brea Walker fired a two-hit shutout for Illinois Wesleyan in game one.
Walker's teammates staked her to a lead with three runs in the top of the third. Jillian Runyon's RBI triple got the Titans on the board against Viking starter
Kelcie Fredrickson (Fisher HS, Foosland, Ill.). Sam Berghoff and Maggie Graham each drove in a run with an infield grounder.
IWU added four runs in the fourth. Berghoff's two-run double was the big blow.
Runyon had a leadoff single in the sixth, stole second and third and scored the Titans' final run on an infield grounder.
Walker allowed just an
Alyssa Klahn (Lincoln-Way Central HS, New Lenox, Ill.) one-out single in the first, a walk to
Kelsey Heiland (Mountain Vista HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) leading off the third and
Lauren Severson's
(Morris HS, Morris, Ill.) out-out single in the sixth. The only other Augustana baserunner was
Zayne Blumberg (Rock Canyon HS, Denver, Colo.), who reached on an error in the fourth. Walker fanned seven and improved to 8-3 on the year.
Fredrickson went 3 2/3 innings and took the loss, falling to 8-4 on the season. Freshman
Hope Moos (Lincoln HS, Hartsburg, Ill.) finished up with 2 1/3 innings of relief.
AUGUSTANA 2, ILLINOIS WESLEYAN 1
The Vikings rode Wilson's home run and an outstanding pitching performance by freshmen
Cecelia Peine (Holt HS, Wentzville, Mo.) and
Alivia Phelps (Coal City HS, Mazon, Ill.) to a win in game two.
Klahn reached on a one-out error in the top of the first. That brought Wilson to the plate and the junior launched an Ally Wiegand offering for her first homer of the season and a 2-0 Augustana lead.
The Titans got their only run off Peine in the third. Runyon had a leadoff single, stole second and scored on Berghoff's RBI groundout.
The Viking starter worked around a leadoff single in the fourth before exiting in favor of Phelps to start the fifth. The freshman reliever issued just one walk in three hitless innings and earned her first save. Peine earned the win to even her season record at 7-7.
Wiegand, who allowed only four hits and fanned 10, suffered just her third loss in 14 decisions this year.
In addition to Wilson's homer, Augustana's other hits included doubles by Klahn and sophomore
Brittany Pospishil (Lincoln-Way East HS, Mokena, Ill.) and a pinch single by Blumberg.
