Titans clinch title with win over Vikings

Wednesday at Thorson-Lucken Field.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Illinois Wesleyan clinched the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin regular season championship Wednesday with a 15-5 win over Augustana at Thorson-Lucken Field. The Titans improved to 13-3 overall and 5-0 in the league, while the Vikings fell to 8-6 and 3-2, respectively.
 
Peter Trunk had two goals and an assist as the visitors jumped in front 5-0 after one period. Alex Doorenbos scored twice and added an assist as IWU went up 9-0 with seven minutes left in the first half.
 
Senior John Danko (Lockport HS, Lockport, Ill.) got Augustana on the board with his 13th goal of the season 5:13 before halftime, but Trunk assisted on Doorenbos' fourth goal of the half less than a minute later and the Titans took a 10-1 lead to intermission.
 
Trunk had three goals and an assist in the third quarter to push the margin to 14-2. Senior Cameron MacKenzie (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) beat the third quarter buzzer with an unassisted goal, his eighth of the season, to give the Vikings their second goal of the game.
 
Freshmen Shayne Forsythe (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) scored twice and junior Lee Whorwell (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) once for the Vikings in the fourth quarter. Senior Nick Zielinski (Huntley HS, Huntley, Ill.) assisted on Whorwell's tally and freshman Joe Kreis (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) was credited with the assist on Forsythe's second goal. IWU's Wil Laidlaw scored with just under three minutes to play to account for the final.
 
Forsythe's two goals led the Vikings. Trunk had five and Doorenbos four for the Titans. Junior Brian Hinsberger (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.) had team highs of six ground balls and two caused turnovers for Augustana. Senior Jake Ellis (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) recorded 16 saves in 54 minutes in goal.
 
IWU finished with advantages of 54-31 in shots, 31-19 in shots on goal and 59-34 in ground balls. The Titans won 21 of 24 faceoffs as well.
 
Coach Dan Torie's outfit will host Elmhurst at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, April 28. The Vikings will be celebrating Senior Day at Thorson-Lucken.
