Junior Scooter Lopez led Augustana with seven ground balls
Tuesday, including a key one with less than a minute remaining
that helped the Vikings hold off Dubuque by a score of 12-11 at
Thorson-Lucken Field.
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana took a 12-9 lead over Dubuque with 2:14 to play Tuesday night at Thorson-Lucken Field and then held off a late Spartan charge to win 12-11 and pick up its first CCIW win. The Vikings improved to 7-7 on the season and 1-4 in the conference, while Dubuque dropped to 6-6 overall and 1-4 in the league. Coach C.J. Durham's outfit will wrap up the 2018 season on Saturday, April 28, hosting Elmhurst at 1:00 p.m.
The first half was a see-saw affair, with the teams alternating goals for the entire 30 minutes. Breann Tjaarda scored off a Claire Carlson assist to get the Spartans on the board first at the 28:39 mark of the period. Freshman
Hannah Tiesenga (Lincoln Park HS, Chicago, Ill.) answered for the Vikings less than two minutes later.
Dubuque got a goal from Carlson which was answered by Augustana junior
Bailey Aasen (Park HS, Cottage Grove, Minn.). Tjaarda scored twice more, with junior
Emily Lucnik (Schaumburg HS, Schaumburg, Ill.) answering each time for the hosts and the teams went to intermission tied 4-4.
The tide turned in the first 16 minutes of the second half, as the Vikings scored four of the first five goals of the period to go up 8-5 with 14:39 to play. Lucnik, junior

Carla Bennett (Marian Catholic HS, South Holland, Ill.) accounted for the Augustana tallies.
The Spartans eventually pulled to within 9-8 at the 7:40 mark on Tjaarda's seventh goal of the night, but freshman
Sandra Pielechaty (Taft HS, Chicago, Ill.) and McCabe scored for the Vikings to push the margin back to three. Carlson and McCabe traded goals and the Augustana lead was 12-9 with two minutes to play.
Carlson scored off a Cassandra Berger assist and then added an unassisted goal with 1:08 left to pull her team to within 12-11. Tjaarda controlled the ensuing draw, but Carlson eventually lost the ball to Viking junior
Scooter Lopez (Mountain Vista HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Augustana was able to run out the final 54 seconds.
Lucnik and McCabe led the Vikings with three goals apiece. Aasen added two goals and three assists and Tiesenga scored twice. Bennett controlled seven draws and caused three turnovers. Lopez grabbed a team-high seven ground balls. Senior
