Freshman Cecelia Peine fired a complete-game shutout in game
two Tuesday, helping Augustana achieve a doubleheader split at
Carthage.
KENOSHA, Wis. – Freshman right-hander
Cecelia Peine (Holt HS, Wentzville, Mo.) fired a complete-game shutout in Tuesday's nightcap at Carthage, lifting Augustana to its sixth straight doubleheader split in CCIW play this year. The hosts won the first game 6-0 and the Vikings rode Peine's performance to a 1-0 win in the game two. Coach
Kris Kistler's squad moved to 21-13 overall and 6-6 in the conference heading into a Saturday, April 28 doubleheader versus North Central at Carver Field. The Lady Reds are now 17-17 overall and 7-5 in the league.
CARTHAGE 6, AUGUSTANA 0
Carthage right-hander Stefanie Guerico handcuffed Augustana on just three hits in the opener.
The Lady Reds got to Viking starter
Kelcie Fredrickson (Fisher HS, Foosland, Ill.) for four runs in the third inning, three of which were unearned. Brooke Sefcik led off the frame with a home run to center and Courtney Polanksi followed with a single to left. Two outs later, Alexandra Millett reached on an error, scoring Polanski and keeping the inning alive. Naomi Alonzo capped the outburst with a two-run homer to right.
After Guerico retired the first nine batters she faced, sophomore
Dina Falk (Lake Park HS, Bloomingdale, Ill.) reached on an infield hit to start the fourth inning. Classmate
Alyssa Klahn (Lincoln-Way Central HS, New Lenox, Ill.) followed with a single to left, but Guerico escaped unscathed.
The only other Viking hit was
Zayne Blumberg's
(Rock Canyon HS, Denver, Colo.) leadoff single to center in the fifth.
The Lady Reds added a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth on RBI singles by Polanski and Danielle Koziczkowski.
Guerico finished the game the way she started, retiring the final nine batters she faced. She gave up just the three singles and no walks while fanning 11 to improve to 9-4 on the season with the win. Fredrickson suffered the loss, falling to 8-3 on the year.
AUGUSTANA 1, CARTHAGE 0
Guerico got the start in game two and blanked Augustana for three innings before giving way to Ellie Bernero.
The Carthage reliever allowed just one baserunner—who reached on an error—in her first two innings, but Falk led off the bottom of the sixth with a bunt single. One out later, Blumberg singled to left, plating Falk with the go-ahead run. Singles by junior
Haley Ruch (Lincoln-Way North HS, Frankfort, Ill.) and freshman
Molly Wrenn (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) loaded the bases, but Bernero escaped with no further damage.
Polankski doubled to left with one out in the top of the seventh, but Peine retired the final two batters to earn her first shutout. She scattered six hits in seven innings, walked just one and fanned seven to even her record at 6-6 on the year. Bernero took the loss, falling to 2-6.
The Lady Reds' best opportunity came in the top of the first, when a walk a single and a Viking error loaded the bases. However, Peine pitched out of the jam. Carthage threatened again in the third, but Klahn cut down a runner at the plate and Peine fanned Bernero to end the inning, leaving two runners stranded.
Blumberg finished 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
