2-1, 12-4 doubleheader sweep of Webster at Carver Field Sunday.
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Junior
Kelcie Fredrickson (Fisher HS, Foosland, Ill.) went the distance in the circle and
Carly Wilson (Johnsburg HS, Ringwood, Ill.) delivered the winning run with an RBI double, as Augustana won the first game of its Sunday doubleheader with Webster 2-1 in 10 innings. The Vikings then pounded out 18 hits to also take the nightcap 12-4 at Carver Field. Coach
Kris Kistler's club, which is scheduled to play a CCIW twin bill at Carthage on Tuesday, April 24, improved to 20-12 on the season. The Gorloks dropped to 11-13.
AUGUSTANA 2, WEBSTER 1 (10)
Fredrickson and Webster's Morgan Mansur each went the distance in a game-one pitcher's duel.
With the game tied 1-1, Fredrickson set the Gorloks down in order in the top of the 10th. Senior
Zayne Blumberg (Rock Canyon HS, Denver, Colo.) led off the bottom half with a double. Sophomore
Dina Falk (Lake Park HS, Bloomingdale, Ill.) followed with a single and moved to second when Blumberg rounded third too far and was retired for the first out. That brought Wilson to the plate and the junior shortstop doubled in Falk to end the contest.
Webster jumped in front on Terri Dearth's one-out solo homer in the top of the third.
Augustana tied it with a run in the fourth. Freshman
Molly Wrenn (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) led off with a single and was pinch run for by sophomore
Amanda Ray (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.). Junior
Haley Ruch (Lincoln-Way North HS, Frankfort, Ill.) followed with a double, plating Ray with the tying run.
Fredrickson stranded Gorloks at first and second in the sixth, but allowed just one baserunner—a Chelsea Thornley two-out single in the ninth—the rest of the way. She surrendered just five hits, walked four and fanned four to improve to 8-2 on the season. Mansur (7-5) took the tough-luck loss.
Falk went 3-for-5 at the plate.
AUGUSTANA 12, WEBSTER 4
Senior
Shelby Grandt's
(Broomfield HS, Broomfield, Colo.) 3-for-4 performance led seven Vikings with multiple hits in a 12-4 game-two win.
Webster got two runs off freshman starter
Alivia Phelps (Coal City HS, Mazon, Ill.) in the top of the first, but Augustana answered with five in the bottom half. Falk and Blumberg started the inning with singles and Falk scored on a wild pitch to get the Vikings on the board. Grandt singled in a run and junior
Clare Kramer (Prophetstown HS, Lyndon, Ill.) doubled in two and then scored the fifth run of the frame on an error.
Falk singled in junior
Marissa Catalano (Lake Park HS, Medinah, Ill.) in the third, as Augustana extended the lead to 6-2.
Dearth's two-run homer in the top of the fifth pulled the Gorloks to within 6-4, but the hosts ended the contest early with six runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Blumberg led off with a single and scored on Grandt's RBI double. Ruch singled in a run and senior
Lauren Severson (Morris HS, Morris, Ill.) had an RBI double. Two more runs scored on an error before freshman
Tristan Bautista's
(United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) bunt single plated classmate
Kaitlin Rusin (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) to extend the margin to 12-4 and end the game via the mercy rule.
Phelps went five innings and got the win to improve to 4-2 on the year. Freshman
Cecelia Peine (Holt HS, Wentzville, Mo.) threw a scoreless sixth to earn her first save.
Grandt and Kramer both scored twice and drove in two runs. In addition to Grandt's three knocks, Falk, Blumberg, Wrenn, Ruch, Kramer and Catalano each had a pair.
