Augustana hammers Carroll 16-1

Freshman Trever Moore had four goals and three assists in
Augustana's 16-1 win at Carroll Saturday.

WAUKESHA, Wis. – Junior Lee Whorwell (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) and freshman Trever Moore (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) each scored four goals Saturday to lead Augustana to a 16-1 win over Carroll at Schneider Stadium. Coach Dan Tories' club improved to 8-5 on the season and 3-1 in the CCIW, while the host Pioneers fell to 2-10 overall and 0-4 in the conference.
 
Moore scored twice as the Vikings jumped in front 4-0 after one period. Whorwell started the day's scoring with an assist from freshman Matthew Lampasona (Oak Forest HS, Oak Forest, Ill.). Lampasona also assisted on Moore's second goal.
 
Airik Ranjo's unassisted goal a minute into the second quarter got Carroll on the board. Whorwell scored twice as Augustana closed the period with four straight goals to lead 8-1 at halftime.
 
Moore scored twice more in the third quarter and also dished out his third assist of the afternoon, which led to a Jason Van Dyck (Crystal Lake South HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) goal. The Vikings put up six goals in the period, including Whorwell's fourth of the day, which came off an assist from senior Nick Zielinski (Huntley HS, Huntley, Ill.).
 
The final two tallies of the day came in the fourth quarter from freshmen Steve Robertson (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) and Ian Robertson (Montini HS, Lombard, Ill.). Ian's goal was his second of the day.
 
Zielinski matched Moore's game-high three assists. Senior Hayden Holland (Owatonna HS, Owatonna, Minn.) led Augustana with seven ground balls and three caused turnovers. Senior McKay Potter (Hudson HS, Hudson, Wis.) won eight of 12 faceoffs.
 
Senior Jake Ellis (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) went 37 minutes in goal  and recorded four saves before exiting in favor of sophomore Tommy Angelos (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.). Angelos turned away three Pioneer shots in 24 minutes of action.
 
Carroll goalie Abe Escarda recorded 22 saves.
 
The Vikings put 38 of their 56 shots on goal, compared to eight of 18 for Carroll. Augustana had a 60-40 edge in ground balls and were successful on 35 of 37 clear attempts. The teams split 22 faceoffs evenly.
 
Next up for Torie's outfit is a home date versus Illinois Wesleyan on Wednesday, April 25. Opening faceoff at Thorson-Lucken Field is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
