Senior center fielder Matt Loeffl went 3-for-9 with four RBI in Tuesday's
7-0, 11-4 doubleheader sweep of Millikin at Swanson Stadium/Brunner
Field.

MOLINE, Ill. – Connor Berek (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Brookfield, Ill.) hurled a five-hit shutout in game one Tuesday and Augustana went on to sweep a doubleheader from Millikin 7-0 and 11-4 at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field. The Vikings improved to 16-7 on the year and 4-4 in the CCIW, while the Big Blue dropped to 12-12 overall and 2-8 in the league. Coach Greg Wallace's club is scheduled to play a doubleheader at Elmhurst on Saturday, April 14.

AUGUSTANA 7, MILLIKIN 0

After Berek set Millikin down in order in the top of the first, junior Gunnar Haskins (Alleman HS, Moline, Ill.) gave him the only run he would need when he launched a Ben Williamson offering over the center field fence for a solo homer in the bottom of the frame.

Haskins drove in another run in the third. Sophomore Nick Kirk (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) reached on a one-out single and a hit batter and walk loaded the bases. Haskins lofted a foul ball just beyond the third base dugout, where the Big Blue's Brent Beals made a nice catch against the fence. However, Kirk tagged and beat Beals' throw home to make it 2-0.

Senior Matt Loeffl (Grayslake Central HS, Grayslake, Ill.) had an RBI double in a two-run fifth and classmate Carter Amundsen (Sheboygan South HS, Sheboygan, Wis.) singled in a run in the sixth to make it 5-0 Augustana.

Junior Ryan Granneman's (McHenry West HS, McHenry, Ill.) two-out double sparked a two-run Viking seventh. Senior John Moraski (Kewanee HS, Kewanee, Ill.) followed with a double that scored Granneman and was later singled in by classmate Tyler Nunez (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.).

Meanwhile, Berek was coasting. He didn't surrender his first hit until Beals' leadoff single in the fifth and allowed just four baserunners through seven innings. He gave up a leadoff double to Jon Walters in the ninth and issued his first walk of the game, but got Seth Coffey to fly to right and end the contest.

The junior left-hander gave up five hits, walked one and fanned seven on the way to his second win in as many decisions. Williamson (1-2) went 5 2/3 innings and took the loss. Granneman and Nunez each had a pair of hits.

AUGUSTANA 11, MILLIKIN 4

In the nightcap, Millikin got on the board against freshman Matt Hoban (Monarch HS, Westminster, Colo.) in the top of the first. Jake Drada doubled and scored on Mason Bruce's two out single.

The hosts answered with four runs in the first and two in the second. Amundsen's bunt single started things in the first. He scored on Loeffl's double off the right field wall. Moraksi doubled in Loeffl and Nunez singled in two runs later in the inning. Loeffl's two-run single to center was the big hit in the third.

Bruce doubled in an unearned run in the top of the third and Drada's two-run homer to center in the fifth pulled the Big Blue to within 6-4.

The Vikings parlayed three hits, two Millikin errors, a hit batter and a wild pitch into three runs in the fifth. They added the game's final two runs in the sixth when a throwing error allowed Moraski and Granneman to score.

Freshman Josh Chamberlain (Legacy HS, Thornton, Colo.) relieved Hoban to start the sixth and threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings before loading the bases in the seventh. Classmate John Hayes (Cherry Creek HS, Greenwood Village, Colo.) came on and coaxed a Beals foul out to escape the jam and then set the Big Blue down in order in the eighth and ninth.

Nunez finished 3-for-5 with a run scored and two knocked in. Loeffl and Moraski were each 2-for-5. Loeffl drove in three runs and Moraski scored three. Amundsen and sophomore Sam Beyer (Legend HS, Parker, Colo.) each had two hits as well. Hoban went five innings and got the win to improve to 3-0.
