Sophomore Dina Falk had four hits, three runs scored and two driven in
Thursday in Augustana's wins over Capital and Corcordia in Clermont,
Florida.
CLERMONT, Fla. – Augustana got complete-game performances from junior
Kelcie Fredrickson (Fisher HS, Foosland, Ill.) and freshman
Hope Moos (Lincoln HS, Hartsburg, Ill.) Thursday to lift the Vikings to wins over Capital and Concordia (Minn.), respectively, in Florida. Coach
Kris Kistler's club downed the Crusaders 4-1 behind Fredrickson and Moos led Augustana to a 9-1 win over the Cobbers. The Vikings are now 6-2 on the year heading into contests versus Johnson State and Houghton on Friday, March 2.
AUGUSTANA 4, CAPITAL 1
Fredrickson continued her outstanding start this spring, scattering seven Capital hits and issuing no walks to improve to 3-1 on the season.
After leaving three runners stranded in the first two innings, Fredrickson's teammates finally got to Crusader starter Brianna Reardon for a run in the bottom of the third.
Dina Falk (Lake Park HS, Bloomingdale, Ill.) led off with an infield hit and moved to second on an
Alyssa Klahn (Lincoln-Way Central HS, New Lenox, Ill.) sacrifice. One out later, freshman
Molly Wrenn (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) singled to right, scoring Falk with the go-ahead run.
Capital touched Fredrickson for four hits to tie it in the top of the fourth. Kristen Mell's single up the middle plated Pam Vickers with the equalizer.
Augustana got the lead back with two in the bottom of the fifth.
Zayne Blumberg (Rock Canyon HS, Denver, Colo.) delivered an RBI groundout and Wrenn doubled in Falk, who had reached on a fielder's choice.
Falk's RBI single scored sophomore
Brittany Pospishil (Lincoln-Way East HS, Mokena, Ill.) with an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Meanwhile, Fredrickson settled in after the fourth and retired the last nine batters she faced to close out the win.
Falk finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one driven in. Wrenn and Pospishil were each 2-for-3 and Wrenn knocked in a pair.
AUGUSTANA 9, CONCORDIA 1
The Vikings scored in all five innings in their second win of the day.
A Concordia error opened the door to a three-run Augustana first. After Klahn reached on the one-out miscue, Blumberg singled and an out later, junior
Baillie Brooks (Dakota Ridge HS, Littleton, Colo.) doubled them both in. Brooks then scored the third unearned run of the frame on
Haley Ruch's
(Lincoln-Way North HS, Frankfort, Ill.) RBI triple.
While Moos was retiring the first eight batters she faced, her teammates continued to add runs. Senior
Lauren Severson (Morris HS, Morris, Ill.) drew a leadoff walk and scored on a Falk single in the top of the second. Blumberg drove in Falk with a single and senior
Shelby Grandt (Broomfield HS, Broomfield, Colo.) knocked in another run with a ground out.
Ruch led off the third with a single and scored on a Severson base hit to put the Vikings up 7-0 after two and a half. Moos finally gave up her first base runner when she walked Riley Bergstrom with two outs in the bottom of the third. A Riley Irman single and another walk loaded the bases, but Moos coaxed a fielder's choice grounder to escape unscathed.
Ruch and Klahn singled in runs in the fourth and fifth, respectively. The Cobbers got an unearned run off Moos in the bottom of the fourth when Madi Veith doubled with one out and scored on an Augustana error.
Moos retired the last five batters she faced, including the last two on strikes, to end the game after five innings. She allowed just two hits, walked two and fanned five to improve to 3-0 on the season. Brynn Sundgaard took the loss for the Cobbers.
Blumberg and Ruch each had three hits for the Vikings and Brooks and Severson added two apiece. Klahn and Severson each scored twice and Brooks and Ruch both knocked in a pair.
