First-half outburst leads to win at Trine

Junior Christina McCabe had five goals, an assist and four draw controls
in Augustana's 15-11 win at Trine Sunday.

ANGOLA, Ind. – Augustana wiped out a 5-2 deficit with eight consecutive goals to end the first half Sunday and went on to defeat Trine 15-11 at Fred Zollner Athletic Stadium. Coach C.J. Durham's squad improved to 6-2 on the season, while the host Thunder dropped to 2-4.
 
Juniors Christina McCabe (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) and Carla Bennett (Marian Catholic HS, South Holland, Ill.) scored in the first minute and a half to put the Vikings up 2-0, but Samantha Thrie and Kristin John each scored twice as Trine responded with five straight goals to lead 5-2 with 18:30 left in the first half.
 
McCabe controlled the ensuing draw and scored, sparking an 8-0 Augustana run over the final 18:20 of the half. Bennett had four of those scores, McCabe added another and junior Bailey Aasen (Park HS, Cottage Grove, Minn.) and sophomore Tracey Keane (Bethel HS, Bethel, Conn.) each found the net as well. Keane's tally came with one second on the first half clock and sent the visitors to intermission with a 10-5 advantage.
 
Goals by Rebecca Plantz and John drew the Thunder to within 10-7 with 21:25 to play, but freshman Hannah Tiesenga (Taft HS, Chicago, Ill.) answered at the 20:07 mark. That started a 5-1 Viking run resulting in a 15-8 lead with less than eight minutes remaining. Aasen and McCabe each scored twice in the flurry.
 
Trine tallied three goals in the last 3:33 to account for the final.
 
McCabe and Bennett each finished with five goals and McCabe added an assist. Aasen had three goals and two assists. Bennett and freshman Courtney Veitch (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) each controlled five draws and McCabe four.
 
Senior goalie Annalia Fowler (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) recorded 13 saves, limited the Thunder to two goals in 14 free position attempts and snared a game-high five ground balls. She picked up the win to improve to 6-2 on the year.
 
John led Trine with four goals. Audrey Poteet recorded 12 saves in goal for the Thunder.
 
Augustana held advantages of 36-33 in shots, 27-24 in shots on goal and 18-15 in ground balls and controlled 13 of 19 draws.
 
The Vikings are back in action on Saturday, March 24, traveling to Chicago, Illinois to face Illinois Tech. First draw is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
