Vikings win two in Minnesota

Junior Lee Whorwell had four goals in Augustana's win over North Central
University Saturday in St. Paul, Minnesota.

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Coach Dan Torie's Augustana lacrosse team went on the road to Minnesota Saturday and picked up a pair of wins at University of Northwestern's Reynolds Field. The Vikings defeated the hosts 12-3 before downing North Central University of Minneapolis 21-2 in their second game of the day. Torie's outfit has now won five in a row and is 5-3 on the season heading into a home contest versus Kalamazoo at Thorson-Lucken Field on Saturday, March 24.
 
AUGUSTANA 12, NORTHWESTERN (MN) 3
 
Augustana scored a pair of goals with a man advantage in the first quarter on its way to a 12-3 victory over Northwestern. Nick Zielinki's (Huntley HS, Huntley, Ill.) man-up tally off a Lee Whorwell (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) assist got the visitors on the board at 12:09 of the first quarter.
 
Christian Erickson's unassisted goal tied it less than two minutes later, but Zielinski fed John Danko (Lockport HS, Lockport, Ill.) for another power play goal and the Vikings had the lead for good. Danko's was the first of eight straight goals for Augustana. He scored twice in the run, as did freshman Shane Forsythe (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.).
 
The Vikings led 7-1 at intermission and goals by Whorwell and Adam Borgetti (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) extended the advantage to 9-1 with 5:31 left in the third quarter. The teams traded goals to end the period. Freshman Jack Preston (Morton HS, Morton, Ill.) found the net twice for Augustana in the fourth quarter.
 
Forsythe led a balanced Viking attack with three goals. Zielinski, Danko and Preston each scored two. Whorwell and Danko each dished out a pair of assists. McKay Potter (Hudson HS, Hudson, Wis.) won 14 of 18 faceoffs and snared a game-high five ground balls. Brian Hinsberger (Lake Zurich HS, lake Zurich, Ill.) caused a game-high three turnovers.
 
Jake Ellis (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) went the first 21 minutes in goal, stopping two shots and getting the win to improve to 4-3 on the year. Tommy Angelos (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) also recorded two saves in 39 minutes in relief.
 
Augustana finished with advantages of 58-13 in shots, 32-7 in shots on goal and 32-16 in ground balls. The Vikings committed 12 turnovers to 25 for Northwestern.
 
AUGUSTANA 21, NORTH CENTRAL (MN) 2
 
Whorwell scored twice in the first 2:09 against North Central and Augustana went on to lead 10-0 after the first quarter. Whorwell already had three goals and Zielinski three assists heading to the second period. Freshman Trever Moore (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) and Steve Robertson (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) each scored twice in the first quarter.
 
Four Vikings each scored a second-quarter goal and Augustana led 14-0 at the break.
 
The Rams scored their only two goals in the third period. The Vikings scored three in the quarter, including Whorwell's fourth of the game.
 
Robertson, Moore and classmate Joe Kreis (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) scored in the fourth quarter, along with junior Adam Borgetti (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.).
 
Whorwell finished with four goals, while Moore and Robertson added three apiece. Moore also matched Zielinski's game-high three assists and grabbed seven ground balls. Potter, who led the way with 10 ground balls, won 20 of 22 faceoffs to finish 34 of 40 on the day.
 
Angelos went the distance in goal, recording seven saves on the way to winning his first decision of the year.
 
Augustana outshot North Central by a 48-19 margin and put 32 if its attempts on goal to nine for the Rams. The Vikings also had a 40-10 edge in ground balls and were successful on 24 of 28 clear attempts.
