AUGUSTANA 5, UW-STOUT 1
Augustana gave starter
Chris Refka (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) all the runs he would need in top of the first. Junior
Ryan Kairis (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) laced a one-out double and scored the game's first run on a single by junior
Mike Avella (Crystal Lake South HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.). Avella and classmate
Gunnar Haskins (Alleman HS, Moline, Ill.), who had reached on a fielder's choice, scored when senior
Matt Loeffl (Grayslake Central HS, Grayslake, Ill.) reached on a two-out Blue Devil error.
After Kairis cut down a Stout runner at the plate with a throw from left to end the second, the Blue Devils scratched out their only run off Refka—an unearned one—in the third. Jared Jarvensivu reached on an error to lead off the inning and eventually scored on a Jack Hemsath sacrifice fly.
Loeffl led off the fourth win a single and after a walk and a sacrifice bunt, scored on a
Jack Hallmark (Cherry Creek HS, Evergreen, Colo.) groundout to make it 4-1.
Haskins drew a leadoff walk and scored an insurance run in the top of the eighth.
Freshman
John Hayes (Cherry Creek HS, Greenwood Village, Colo.) relieved Refka to start the ninth and set the Blue Devils down in order.
Refka allowed six hits and issued two walks in eight strong innings. He struck out three and got the win to improve to 4-0 on the season. Zach Carlson suffered the loss for Stout.
Six different Vikings each had a base hit.
BETHEL 15, AUGUSTANA 1
Augustana starter
Mike Powers (Benet Academy, Westmont, Ill.) put up a pair of goose eggs before the Royals scored twice in the top of the third. Mitch Butvil's two-out, two-run single was the big hit.
Bethel added three in the fourth. Jake Schuber and Sam Horner each had an RBI single.
Haskins drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the fourth and scored the only Viking run on
Tyler Nunez's
(Byron HS, Byron, Ill.) RBI single through the middle.
Horner's two-run double was the big hit in a four-run Royal fifth. He had another two-bagger and scored in a two-run Bethel eighth and finished off a big day with an RBI single in a four-run ninth.
Powers went four innings and suffered his first loss in three decisions. Nunez had a pair of hits.
Horner went 5-for-6 with five RBI to pace a 17-hit Royal attack.
