Vikings win 12-4 at Cornell

Freshman Trever Moore had four goals and an assist Monday to lead
Augustana to a 12-4 win over Cornell in Mount Vernon, Iowa.

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – Augustana broke open a close game with six unanswered goals in the third quarter Monday and went on to post a 12-4 win over Cornell at Ash Park Stadium. Freshman Trever Moore (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) led the way with four goals as Coach Dan Torie's squad won its third straight game to improve to 3-3 on the year. The Rams dropped to 1-2.
 
Michael Paquette got the hosts on the board first with a goal at 11:37 of the first quarter. After three Viking goals, two by junior Lee Whorwell (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.), Paquette closed the scoring in the period with an assist from Carlos Siguenza.
 
Moore parlayed an assist from senior Nick Zielinski (Huntley HS, Huntley, Ill.) into a second-period score before Paquette's third of the night sent the teams to halftime with Augustana on top 4-3.
 
Moore started the Vikings' 6-0 run in the third quarter with a goal at the 13:17 mark. Freshmen Steve Robertson (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) and Shane Forsythe (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) added goals, as did Whorwell, before Moore finished the outburst with a pair of tallies to give Augustana a 10-3 lead going to the final period.
 
A.J. Fisher scored to pull the Rams to within 10-4, but Forsythe and senior Cameron MacKenzie (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) answered for the Vikings to close out the scoring. MacKenzie's goal came off of Zielinski's fourth assist of the night.
 
Moore added an assist to his four goals. Whorwell had three goals and an assist. In addition to his four assists, Zielinski had a game-high seven ground balls. Senior McKay Potter (Hudson HS, Hudson, Wis.) won 10 of 18 faceoffs.
 
Senior Jake Ellis (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) went the first three quarters in goal and recorded three saves to get the win. Sophomore Tommy Angelos (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) finished up, making four saves in the fourth quarter.
 
The Vikings put 24 of their 36 shots on goal, compared to 11 of 21 for Cornell. Augustana had a 42-28 edge in ground balls, won 10 of 19 faceoffs and succeeded on 17 of 24 clear attempts.
 
On St. Patrick's Day, the Vikings will be in Minnesota, taking on University of Northwestern in St. Paul at 11:30 a.m. and North Central University in Minneapolis at 3:00 p.m.
