WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Freshmen Matt Hoban (Monarch HS, Westminster, Colo.) and Josh Chamberlain (Legacy HS, Thornton, Colo.) limited Alma to four hits while fanning nine in eight innings Tuesday to lead Augustana to a 4-2 win over the Scots at Chain of Lakes Stadium. The victory lifted Coach Greg Wallace's club to 4-1 on the season, while Alma suffered its first loss in three outings.

Hoban escaped a bases-loaded jam in the top of the first unscathed and his teammates got him a run in the bottom half. Senior Carter Amundsen (Sheboygan South HS, Sheboygan, Wis.) drew a two-out walk, moved to third on a Scot error and scored the game's first run on an Eric Frontzak wild pitch.

Augustana parlayed three errors, two hits and a walk into three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Frontzak exited in favor of Dylan Dzendzel after retiring the first two batters and the next three Vikings all reached on errors, loading the bases. Junior Ryan Kairis (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) and Tyler Nunez (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.) each drove in a run with a single and Amundsen drew a walk to force in another.

Chamberlain relieved Hoban to start the seventh.

Alma scored two in the eighth when Max Trucks reached on a one-out error and Vann Acker blasted his second homer in as many days. Chamberlain escaped further damage with a strikeout and a flyout. Senior Mitch Malone (Minooka HS, Minooka, Ill.) fanned two in a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his first save.

Hoban (1-0) gave up three hits in six scoreless innings. He walked three and fanned eight. Chamberlain gave up one hit, issued one walk and struck out one. One of the two runs he allowed was earned.

Sophomore Jake Huber (Lockport HS, Homer Glen, Ill.) had two of Augustana's seven hits.

The Vikings are back in action on Thursday, March 1, taking on Cabrini in a doubleheader at Chain of Lakes Stadium beginning at 10:00 a.m. EST.
