Nick Zielinski (Huntley HS, Huntley, Ill.) and junior
Lee Whorwell (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) each scored twice Tuesday to lead Augustana to its first win of the season, 10-6 over Hendrix at Young-Wise Memorial Stadium. The Vikings improved to 1-3 on the year, while the Warriors fell to 2-3.
Drew Scanlan scored twice as the hosts took a 4-2 lead after one quarter. Augustana's goals came from junior
Jason Van Dyck (Crystal Lake South HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) and senior
Cameron MacKenzie (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.).
The Vikings dominated the middle two periods, scoring six of seven goals during that time. Zielinski assisted on a
Steve Robertson (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) goal and junior
Adam Borgetti (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) scored with 4:54 left in the half to tie the contest at 4-4. Whorwell assisted on Borgetti's goal. Zielinski's first tally of the night three minutes later gave Augustana a 5-4 lead at intermission.
Garrett Brown scored at 13:46 of the third quarter to forge one final tie, but Whorwell scored off a MacKenzie assist a minute later, the first of five straight Viking goals. Freshman
Trever Moore (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) and Zielinski each found the net within two minutes and the visitors led 8-5 going to the fourth quarter.
After nearly 21 scoreless minutes, an
Erick Krall (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) goal extended the Augustana advantage to 9-5 with 4:45 to play. Whorwell added his second tally of the game less than a minute later and Hendrix's Dominic Dachille capped the night's scoring with a goal in the final minute.
The Warriors had a 37-30 advantage in shots, including 23-19 in shots on goal, while the Vikings had an 18-15 edge in ground balls.
Zielinski and Whorwell each had an assist in addition to their two goals. Senior
McKay Potter (Hudson HS, Hudson, Wis.) won 13 of 20 faceoffs and led Augustana with five ground balls. Junior
Brian Hinsberger (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.) caused two turnovers.
