ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Beloit scored four unanswered goals in the final 5:04 of play Wednesday to pull out a 10-9 victory over Augustana at Thorson-Lucken Field. The contest was the season opener for the Buccaneers, while the Vikings drop to 0-2 on the year.

With 5:34 to play the hosts, who had led since midway through the second quarter, extended their advantage to 9-6 on a man-up goal by freshman Jack Preston (Morton HS, Morton, Ill.). Classmate Trever Moore (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) was credited with his third assist of the night on the play.

Matt Lee answered with his third goal of the game thirty seconds later. Augustana still led 9-7 as the clock ticked under three minutes, but Beloit's Kevin Joswiak parlayed a Mike Spencer assist into a goal at the 2:56 mark, trimming the deficit to one.

With a minute left, Buccaneer goalie John Murphy made the save on an Adam Borgetti (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) shot and on the counter, Ezra Rogers tallied the equalizer. Luke Thomson won the ensuing faceoff and with 16 seconds left Michael Boyland scored off a Mark Gannon assist to give the visitors their first lead since 2-1 early in the second quarter. Thomson controlled the final faceoff and Beloit was able to run out the clock.

Beloit led 2-1 after the first quarter, but the Vikings got second-quarter goals from junior Lee Whorwell (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.), Moore and senior John Danko (Lockport HS, Lockport, Ill.) to lead 4-2 at halftime.

The teams traded goals for much of the second half until the Buccaneers' final flurry.

Moore had two goals and three assists to lead Augustana. Preston and Danko each had a pair of goals as well. Senior Cameron MacKenzie (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) matched Moore's three helpers and shared the team lead in ground balls (four) with junior Matt Balara (St. Charles North HS, Elburn, Ill.). Whorwell was credited with seven caused turnovers. Senior Jake Ellis (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) made 14 saves in goal.

Lee led Beloit with three goals.
