The Vikings celebrate Salah Aghalf's double-overtime game-winner
against Illinois Wesleyan on October 10.

Augustana finishes 5-12 overall and 3-5 and seventh in the CCIW; Salah Aghlaf and Sander Soerhaug earn All-CCIW honors

Coach Mick Regan's Augustana soccer team finished the 2018 season with a record of 5-12 overall and 3-5 in the CCIW, an improvement of two wins and two places from last year's conference finish. Junior midfielder Salah Aghlaf (Casablanca, Morocco) and sophomore defender Sander Soerhaug (Vardafjell VGS, Haugesund, Norway) were both named to the All-CCIW second team.

The Vikings opened the season by splitting their first four matches. They alternated road losses at Simpson (3-1) and Knox (2-0) with 1-0 home wins over Coe and Buena Vista. Three straight losses followed, including a 4-0 setback to 2017 national runner-up North Park at Thorson-Lucken Field, but they bounced back to win 1-0 at Carroll to move to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in the CCIW.

After a pair of defeats, Augustana picked up league wins over Illinois Wesleyan and Millikin on October 10 and 13 to improve to 5-7 on the season and 3-2 in the conference. The 1-0 victory over IWU at Thorson-Lucken came on Aghlaf's bicycle-kick goal with a minute remaining in the second overtime session. Aghlaf also had a goal and an assist in the 2-1 win at Millikin and earned CCIW Offensive Player of the Week honors for his efforts.

The Vikings dropped their final five matches of the season.

Aghlaf led Augustana with four goals, three assists and 11 points this season. In CCIW play, his four goals tied for fourth in the conference, while his three game-winning goals tied for the league lead. Senior Jack McKearnan (Warren HS, Gurnee, Ill.) was second on the team with a goal and two assists for four points.

Junior Jeremy Klaber (Stevenson HS, Buffalo Grove, Ill.) played 13 matches and 1044 minutes in goal. He finished 3-8 with a 1.81 goals against average and a save percentage of .747. Senior Jeff Bell (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) filled in when Klaber missed 5½ games with an injury and posted a 2-4 record, a save percentage of .738 and a GAA of 1.96. Bell finished second in the CCIW with an average of 5.40 saves per match.
