Senior Clare Kramer scored seven points, pulled down five rebounds and had
three steals and two assists in Augustana's 69-56 win over Carroll in the CCIW
opener on Saturday, December 1 in the Carver Center.
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Mark Beinborn couldn't have scripted a better start than the one his team put together in Augustana's 69-56 win over Carroll on Saturday, December 1 in the Carver Center. It was the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin opener for both teams and Beinborn had to be ecstatic over that fact that his Vikings scored the first 15 points of the contest.
Senior
Izzy Anderson (Alleman Catholic HS, Rock Island, Ill.) started things off with a three-point field goal off an assist from fellow senior
Carly McCameron (Antioch HS, Antioch, Ill.). That got the ball rolling and senior
Clare Kramer (Prophetstown HS, Lyndon, Ill.) hit a pair of three throws at 9:02 and junior
Alexis Jones (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) nailed a layup at 8:39 to make it 7-0. Kramer came back with a layup at 6:51 to bump the margin to 9-0 and junior
Maddy Murillo (Antioch HS, Antioch, Ill.) came off the bench to score at 5:50 to make it 11-0.
A basket by junior
Mia Lambert (Macomb HS, Macomb, Ill.) at 5:16 stretched the lead to 13-0 and Jones scored on a rebound of her own missed free throw at 2:38 and the margin was 15-0.
Carroll finally got into the scoring column at 2:26 on a basket by Sierra Grubor to make it 15-2.
By the end of the quarter the lead was 20-10 and the Vikings were on their way to their fourth victory of the season against three defeats.
The Pioneers did manage to cut the margin to seven (31-24) on a basket by Grubors with 3:15 left before halftime but Beinborn's club closed out the second period on a 7-2 run . The lead at intermission was 12 points (38-26) and a 10-4 spurt to open the third quarter extended the advantage to 48-30 with 3:26 left thanks to a pair of free throws by Jones.
At the end of the third quarter with was 54-39 in favor of the Vikings and the lead would grow to as many as 20 (64-44) with 6:24 left.
Augustana won despite turning the ball over 28 times, an alarmingly high number considering the Vikings were averaging just 16 per game heading into the contest.
Jones was all over the floor with a team high 18 points and 11 rebounds. She was good on seven of 11 from the floor, including one of two from three point range, and she was three of six from the free throw line. She had three assists and a blocked shot. Anderson was also in double figures with 13 points and nine rebounds with two assists and a blocked shot.
Senior
Sadie Roberts (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) pulled down seven rebounds and had two points and a steal while Kramer had five rebounds, seven points, two assists and three steals. Sophomore
Justice Edell (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) tallied seven points and pulled down five rebounds. Senior
Scooter Lopez (Mountain Vista HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) dropped in eight points and had three assists and one steal.
Augustana shot .472 (25-53) from the floor for the game but in the first quarter the Vikings made seven of nine shots for a sizzling .778.
The Vikings, now 4-3 overall and 1-0 in the CCIW, will host North Central on Wednesday, December 5 at 7:00 p.m. in the Carver Center. Carroll falls to 3-4 overall and 0-1 in the league and the Pioneers were led in scoring by Grubor with 16 points.
