Augustana vs. Carthage Preview

Sophomore Max Uranich is the Vikings' leading receiver this year
with 41 catches--ninth-most in a single season at Augustana.

Augustana used another balanced offensive effort and some clutch defensive plays to defeat Carroll 24-14 this past Saturday in Waukesha, Wisconsin. The win lifted Coach Steve Bell's squad to 4-5 on the season and 3-5 in the CCIW. The Vikings will close out the 2018 season on Saturday, November 10 versus Carthage at Lindberg Stadium. Kickoff for the Senior Day contest is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

On the year, senior quarterback Zachary Fuller (St. Patrick HS, Schiller Park, Ill.) has completed 175 of 279 passing attempts (62.7%) for 1,886 yards and seven touchdowns with eight interceptions. He is nearing Augustana single-season records for pass attempts (317, David Lee) and completions (195, David Lee) and with 3,923 career passing yards, is just 48 behind Sam Frasco for third-most in school history.

Senior Ryan Pitra (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.) has rushed 169 times for 809 yards (4.8 per carry) and seven touchdowns. He is now 15th on the Vikings' career rushing list with 2,110 yards and only six backs in program history—Joe Thompson, Brad Price, Scott Tumilty, Craig Allison, David Chorney and Ron Nelson—have more career carries than Pitra's 516.

Augustana's leading receiver—sophomore Max Uranich (La Salle-Peru HS, La Salle, Ill.) has cracked the Vikings' single-season top ten in receptions (41—ninth) and with 578 receiving yards, needs just 17 against Carthage Saturday to do the same in that category.

Junior linebacker Luke Sawicki (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) continues to lead the defense with 55 solo, 32 assisted and 87 total tackles, as well as 15 tackles for loss. He's tied for the team lead in interceptions (two) with sophomore defensive backs John Kappel (Wheeling HS, Wheeling, Ill.) and David Lane (Civic Memorial HS, Bethalto, Ill.). Kappel and senior linebacker Cassin Wolfe (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) are next with 59 and 56 total stops, respectively. Junior end Xavier Holley (Bettendorf HS, Davenport, Iowa) had a pair of sacks at Carroll and leads the team with 6½ this season.

Carthage, under first-year Head Coach Dustin Hass, will bring a 3-6 overall record into Saturday's game. The Red Men and Vikings are currently tied for sixth in the CCIW standings at 3-5.

Hass' defense features four players who received All-CCIW recognition a year ago. Linebacker Emmet Trost, a second team selection, has team highs of 51 solo, 24 assisted and 75 total tackles. Another second team pick, free safety Amani Dennis, has a team-high five interceptions and first team All-CCIW corner Connor Calvert leads with 13 pass breakups. Up front, end Kameron Stubblefield has team highs of 14½ tackles for loss and seven sacks and tackle Cedric Fry was a second team All-CCIW selection last year.

The Red Men have surrendered 27.1 points and 318.1 total yards per game this year, but just 83.7 yards per game and 2.3 per carry on the ground

The Carthage offense, which averages 27.4 points and 386.8 total yards per contest, is led by quarterback Billy Dury and running back Lafayette McGary. Dury has connected on 103 of 189 throws (54.5%) for 1,404 yards and 10 touchdowns with 13 interceptions and McGary has rushed for 910 yards and eight touchdowns on 200 carries (4.6 yards per carry).

Evan French, with 49 catches for 748 yards and three touchdowns, is the Red Men's leading receiver and Dury also has 2017 first team All-CCIW return specialist Tommy Bazarek (23-317-5) and second team all-conference tight end Sean Wells (8-41-1) among his receiving corps.

11/03/18—AUGUSTANA 24, CARROLL 14

Augustana wins 24-14 at Carroll

WAUKESHA, Wis. – Junior Bobby Jarosz (Prospect HS, Mt. Prospect, Ill.) rushed for two touchdowns Saturday, including the game-clincher with 1:50 remaining, as Augustans downed Carroll 24-14 at Schneider Stadium. Coach Steve Bell's outfit improved to 4-5 on the season and 3-5 in the CCIW, while the host Pioneers fell to 3-6 overall and 2-6 in the conference.

Carroll took the opening kickoff and drove 70 yards in seven plays for touchdown. Preston Bell finished things off with a 16-yard scoring run and Carson Roseleip's point after gave the Pioneers a 7-0 lead.

After the teams traded punts, Augustana answered. Quarterback Zachary Fuller (St. Patrick HS, Schiller Park, Ill.) connected with Max Uranich (La Salle-Peru HS, La Salle, Ill.) for a 13-yard completion on a third-and-10 play and the Vikings converted a third-and-13 when Carroll was called for pass interference. Jarosz eventually took it in from three yards out to cap an 11-play, 76-yard drive. Ryan Ganson's (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.) kick tied it at 7-7 with 2:11 left in the first quarter.

The Pioneers drove to the Augustana 24-yard line early in the second period, but sophomore cornerback David Lane (Civic Memorial HS, Bethalto, Ill.) ended the threat when he intercepted Colton Bahling at the Viking four.

Fuller hit Uranich for 39 yards as the visitors drove 70 yards to the Carroll 26 before the drive stalled. Ganson's 43-yard field goal try was wide left. Following a Pioneer punt, Augustana put together a nine-play, 65-yard march which Ganson finished with a 28-yard field goal to put his team up 10-7 with 3:38 left in the half.

The Vikings got one more shot to score before the half ended. After forcing another Carroll punt, they drove from their own 23 to the Pioneer 24 in 30 seconds, but Ganson's 41-yard try was wide left as the gun sounded and Augustana took a 10-7 advantage to intermission.

Fuller completed four straight passes for 52 yards to start the opening drive of the second half. Three plays later, senior Ryan Pitra (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.) scored on a one-yard run to cap an eight-play, 60-yard march. Ganson's conversion put the Vikings on top 17-7.

Carroll drove to  the Augustana 23-yard line late in the third quarter, but junior Xavier Holley (Bettendorf HS, Davenport, Ill.) sacked Bahling for an eight-yard loss on fourth down. However, the Pioneers pulled to within three points on their next possession. J.J. Keels rushed three times for 34 yards before Bahling eventually took it in from seven yards out. Roseleip's extra point made it 17-14 with 9:08 to play.

On the ensuing drive, the Vikings went to the ground game to grind out a 16-play, 69-yard drive culminated with an eight-yard scoring run by Jarosz. The only two pass completions were big ones, as Fuller hit Uranich for seven yards on third-and-five and Tom Dolis (Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.) for 10 yards on fourth-and-nine. The march took 7:11 off the clock and Ganson's third PAT of the day gave Augustana a 24-14 lead.

An Austin Nice (Normal Community HS, Bloomington, Ill.) sack ended Carroll's last-gasp drive and the Vikings took a knee to run out the final eight seconds.

Fuller finished the day 18 of 27 through the air for 223 yards with one interception. Pitra led the rushing attack with 103 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries. Jarosz carried 11 times for 52 yards and two scores. Uranich caught six passes for 123 yards.

In addition to his interception, Lane led the defense with eight solo and nine total tackles. Linebackers Cassin Wolfe (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) and Luke Sawicki (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) were each in on eight stops. Nice finished with three tackles for loss and Holley recorded a pair of sacks.

Augustana wraps up the 2018 season on Saturday, November 10. The Carthage Red Men invade Lindberg Stadium for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
