and six steals led Augustana to a
63-59 win over Webster in St.
Louis, Missouri Saturday.
Beinborn's outfit won its third straight to move to 3-2 on the season, while the Gorloks fell for the first time in three outings this year.
Izzy Anderson (Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) scored seven points in the first three minutes as the Vikings jumped out to an early lead. A
Mia Lambert (Macomb HS, Macomb, Ill.) three-pointer with 4:33 left in the first quarter put them up 18-6—their biggest lead of the night, but Addison Beussink scored 10 points to help Webster trim the deficit to 25-21 after one period.
Jones' layup 3:43 before halftime gave the visitors their biggest lead of the second quarter at 33-27, but the Gorloks responded with the final eight points of the half. Darieana Hunter's layup at the 2:07 mark gave Webster its first lead (34-33) and Caity Jones hit one of two free throws with 1:12 left to give the hosts a 35-33 halftime lead.
Two Jones field goals early in the third quarter put Augustana back on top and the Vikings extended the advantage to seven points twice in the period—the second time at 48-41 on a
Jeni Crane (Woodstock HS, Woodstock, Ill.) jumper at the 1:45 mark. A pair of Allyssa McByers free throws trimmed the Gorlok's deficit to 48-43 after three quarters.
Brylee Manes scored four points in a 6-0 run that put Webster back on top 53-52 with 6:06 to play and the Gorloks still led 55-53 after two Hannah Cottrell free throws with 4:01 to play. However, Jones and Anderson each scored four points as the Vikings answered with eight straight to go up 61-55 with 1:55 remaining. Webster would get as close as 61-59 on two Jaysea Morgan free throws with 35 seconds left, but Jones and Lambert each split a pair of charity tosses in the final 19 seconds to ice the game.
Jones' 28 points came on 11-of-15 shooting from the floor. She's averaged 20.7 points on .765 field goal shooting during Augustana's winning streak. Anderson added 16 points, three assists and three steals before fouling out.
Scooter Lopez (Mountain Vista HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) chipped in a game-high seven assists.
Beussink led the hosts with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Morgan scored 11.
The Vikings shot .389 (21-54) from the floor, .167 (2-12) from three-point range and .704 (19-27) from the free throw line. They limited the Gorloks to 16 field goals in 55 attempts (.291), including 0-for-6 from beyond the arc. Webster shot .675 from the foul line on 27 of 40 and won the rebound battle 49-29, but committed 28 turnovers to 21 for the Vikings.
