Clare Kramer (Prophetstown HS, Lyndon, Ill.) and
Alexis Jones (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) each scored four points as the visitors jumped in front 10-4 four and a half minutes in. Augustana still led 13-8 following a Jones bucket with 4:13 remaining in the first quarter, but DePauw closed the period on an 8-2 run, grabbing its first lead (14-13) on an Imani Graham putback before taking a 16-15 advantage to the second quarter.
The Tigers, behind four Claire Keefe points, tallied the first nine of the period to extend their lead to double digits at 25-15. A
Scooter Lopez (Mountain Vista HS, Highlands Ranch, Ill.) three-pointer eventually pulled the Vikings to within 32-23, but the hosts answered with another nine-point run to go up 41-23. Maeve Summerville scored four in the spurt.
Justice Edell (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) fed
Sadie Roberts (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) for a layup that cut Augustana's halftime deficit to 41-25.
The hosts kept the Vikings at bay in the third quarter. A conventional three-point play by Jones cut the margin to 13 (48-35), but DePauw scored six straight and took its biggest lead of the game, 54-35, on a Summerville three-pointer with 2:38 left in the period. Edell's free throw with 31 seconds left made it 54-37 after three quarters.
Augustana still trailed 57-39 with seven and a half minutes to play, but Jones scored seven points in a 13-4 Viking run that trimmed the margin under double digits. Her two free throws with 1:05 to play made it 61-52. A
Mia Lambert (Macomb HS, Macomb, Ill.) three-pointer with 27 seconds left got Augustana as close (64-56) as it had been since early in the second quarter, but Tiger Maya Howard converted four free throws in the final 25 seconds to ice the contest.
Jones led the Vikings with 16 points, six rebounds and two steals. Lopez added 10 points and two steals. Augustana finished the night 19 of 51 (.373) from the field, three of 18 (.167) from three-point range and 17 of 22 (.773) from the free throw line.
Howard and Keefe each scored 18 for DePauw. The Tigers shot .451 (23-51) from the floor, .385 (5-13) from beyond the arc and .810 (17-21) from the foul line. They won the battle of the boards 35-23 and committed 15 turnovers to 11 for the Vikings.
Augustana will be back in action on Saturday, November 17, traveling to Pella, Iowa to face Central, with tipoff scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
