Big second half lets Vikings roll past North Central 94-55

assists as Augustana raced past North Central 94-55 on 
Wednesday, January 17 in the Carver Center.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana won for the second straight game and the key was an impressive second half performance in a 94-55 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin win over North Central on Wednesday, January 17 in the Carver Center. The Vikings broke the game completely wide open by outscoring the Cardinals 57-29 in the third and fourth quarters combined.
 
After a sluggish start Augustana trailed 10-7 with 3:42 left in the first quarter following a three-point field goal by Maya Walls. The Vikings then went on a 13-1 run to close out the period with a 20-11 lead and they were never headed after that. Sophomore Mia Lambert (Macomb HS, Macomb, Ill.) got this started with a basket off a Justice Edell (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) assist at 3:30 to cut the margin to 10-9. A basket by sophomore Alexis Jones (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) at 2:49 put Augustana ahead for good 11-10.
 
The Vikings led 37-26 at halftime and with 2:06 left in the third quarter Walls hit a three-pointer for North Central to cut the lead to 13 (56-43). Augustana then closed out the period on a 7-0 run with junior Scooter Lopez (Mountain Vista HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) nailing a three-point field goal and Jones hitting a pair of buckets to push the margin to 20 points (63-43) heading into the fourth.
 
Augustana went on an 18-2 run to start the period and take an 83-47 lead to put the contest on ice.
 
Junior Izzy Anderson (Alleman Catholic HS, Rock Island, Ill.) led the Vikings in scoring with 27 points and she grabbed six rebounds with two assists and three steals. She was also a perfect eight of eight from the free throw line. Jones had 19 points and a game-high 10 rebounds with two steals. Lopez had 15 points and a game-high eight assists with three rebounds and two steals. Also in double figures for Mark Beinborn's Vikings was senior Meghan Stovall (Broomfield HS, Broomfield, Colo.) with 11 points, five rebounds and two assists.
 
Augustana pounded the Cardinals on the boards to the tune of a 51-36 margin and the Vikings limited North Central to just .317 (20-63) from the field and .217 (5-23) from three point range. The winners also forced the visitors to turn the ball over 22 times.
 
After shooting just .361 (13-36) from the floor in the first half, Augustana shot .568 (21-37) from the field in the second half and ended up hitting .466 (34-73) for the game.
 
North Central only had one player in double figures and that was Maya Walls with 10 points.
 
Augustana is now 11-5 overall and 4-3 in the CCIW and will play at North Park on Saturday, January 20 at 5:00 p.m. while North Central fell to 4-12 and 2-5.
