ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Complete domination of the second and third quarters proved to be the difference as Augustana rolled to an impressive 89-54 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin victory over Carroll on Saturday, January 13 in the Carver Center. After nursing a 20-15 lead after one period of play, the Vikings outscored the Pioneers 53-21 combined in the second and third stanzas to blow the game wide open.

The onslaught actually began late in the first quarter as the Vikings were ahead by a single point (16-15) with 1:08 left to play. Two free throws by junior Izzy Anderson (Alleman Catholic HS, Rock Island, Ill.) with :46 left and then a steal and a buzzer-beating basket by her made it 20-15 at the end of one.

The Vikings scored eight of the first nine points of the second quarter to bump the margin to 28-16 with less than three minutes gone. The lead kept ballooning and a basket by junior Sadie Roberts (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) with :59 left before halftime made it a 23 point margin (47-24) at intermission.

It was more of the same in the third quarter as Anderson hit back-to-back three point field goals, Roberts nailed a basket and senior Meghan Stovall (Broomfield HS, Broomfield, Colo.) converted on an old-fashioned three-point play to make it a 30-point margin (58-28) with 6:35 left. Eventually the lead would grow to 39 points (73-34) with :40 left after a basket by freshman Justice Edell (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.).

Carroll did manage to outscore the Vikings 18-16 in the fourth quarter for a final score of 89-54 in favor of Augustana.

Anderson led head coach Mark Beinborn's team with 24 points as she hit on nine of 13 field goals (including four of five from three point range) and was two of two from the free throw line. She grabbed four rebounds and had one assist, one blocked shot and two steals.

Stovall scored 14 points with four rebounds while Edell had 10 points with four rebounds. Roberts scored eight points but led the way in the rebounding department with nine as Augustana owned a 41-36 advantage on the backboards.

Junior point guard Scooter Lopez (Mountain Vista HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) led the team with 11 assists and she also had four points, two rebounds and one steal. Junior Clare Kramer (Prophetstown HS, Lyndon, Ill.) had nine points and five rebounds.

The Vikings forced 26 Carroll turnovers and shot .507 (34-67) from the field, including 11-19 (.579) from three point range.

Carroll was led in scoring by Brittney Wald with 19 points.

Augustana is now 10-5 overall and 3-3 in the CCIW while Carroll is 5-10 and 2-4 in league play. The Vikings will be in action again on Wednesday, January 17 at home against North Central. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
