WHEATON, Ill. – Poor shooting doomed Augustana once again as the Vikings did not shoot very well and the result was a 73-56 defeat at the hands of Wheaton in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin women's basketball action on Wednesday, January 10 in King Arena. The first half was especially harsh on head coach
Mark Beinborn's team as the Blue & Gold made just seven of 31 shots for .226 shooting percentage.
In the second half things didn't get much better as the Vikings hit on just 13 of 37 for .351 and ended up at .294 (20-68) for the game.
Wheaton never trailed in the game, scoring the contest's first four points and eventually building a 13-6 lead after one quarter. Augustana trailed by 12 (27-15) with 2:41 left in second period but
Clare Kramer (Prophetstown HS, Lyndon, Ill.) hit a free throw and a three point field goal and junior
Meghan Stovall (Broomfield HS, Broomfield, Colo.) hit a pair of free throws to spark a mini 6-1 run that cut the lead to 28-21 at halftime.
In the third quarter Wheaton went on a 14-5 run to eventually build a 16 point (42-26) advantage with 4:26 left. The Vikings would not get the margin under double digits for the rest of the game.
Wheaton's defense helped smother the Augustana offense and the Thunder completely dominated things inside with a 57-42 rebounding advantage and 11 blocked shots.
Junior
Izzy Anderson (Alleman Catholic HS, Rock Island, Ill.) led the Vikings in scoring with 14 points while sophomore
Alexis Jones (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) had 11 and Kramer scored 10. Jones was a bright spot on the boards as she hauled in a game high 12 rebounds and had an assist, a blocked shot and two steals.
Wheaton had four players in double digits in scoring and two in rebounding. Hannah Frazier scored 18 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, had five blocked shots and three steals. Jordan Myroth scored 12 points while Devin Kyler and Hannah Williams each had 11. Kelly Lawson only had five points but she equaled Frazier in the rebounding department with 10.
Wheaton is now 10-4 overall and 4-2 in the CCIW while Augustana falls to 9-5 and 2-3. The Vikings host Carroll at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 13 in the Carver Center.
