Junior Jeff Bell recorded eight saves in Augustana's 1-0
setback at Aurora Friday.
AURORA, Ill. – Aurora's Collin Foreman scored in the 69th minute Friday to lift the hosts to a 1-0 victory over Augustana in game one of the Spartan Classic at Vago Field. The Vikings fall to 0-3 on the season and will wrap up tournament play on Sunday, taking on Benedictine at 1:00 p.m. Aurora improved to 3-1 on the year.
Junior keeper
Jeff Bell (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) made two saves in the first four minutes to keep the Spartans off the board. Augustana first shot attempt came in the eighth minute off the foot of freshman
Chris Plantz (Larkin HS, Elgin, Ill.). It was blocked by an Aurora defender.
In the 14th minute freshman
Michael Tirabasso (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) launched the Vikings' first shot that was on frame, but Spartan keeper Phillip Lewy was there for the save. By the end of a scoreless first half, Aurora had outshot Augustana 11-4, including 5-2 in shots on goal.
The hosts got off the first three shots of the second half as well, with two off the mark and another saved by Bell. However, in the 69th minute, Foreman parlayed an assist from Justin Rutherford into his first goal of the season and a 1-0 Spartan lead.
Lewy stopped a
Shonari Phillips (Tindley HS, Indianapolis, Ind.) shot at the 78-minute mark, the final attempt the Vikings would get off in the match.
Bell finished with eight saves, while Lewy turned away three Augustana shots. Aurora finished with a 19-5 edge in shots, putting nine on frame to three for the Vikings. The hosts had a 5-2 advantage in corners, while Augustana committed 12 fouls to the Spartans' eight.
