ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Junior
Andria Serra (Alleman HS, Silvis, Ill.) scored in the first half and assisted on a second-half goal by freshman
Jenna Dvorak (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) Wednesday, as Augustana opened College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin play with a 2-0 win over Elmhurst at Thorson-Lucken Field. The Vikings improved to 4-4 overall and 1-0 in the league. The Bluejays fell for just the second time in seven matches and are now 0-1 in the conference.
Elmhurst got off the first four shots of the match, but senior keeper
Bailey Bradford (Deerfield HS, Riverwoods, Ill.) recorded three saves in the first 16 minutes. The other Bluejay attempt was blocked.
In the 18th minute, Serra fired a shot form 40 yards out on the left side. Elmhurst keeper Sophia Tuliglowski had come out of the goal mouth and Serra's shot got by her and settled into the right side of the net for a 1-0 Augustana lead. The tally was Serra's first of the season.
Juniors
Abby Wendell (Hersey HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) and
Jordyn Sundberg (Aurora Central Catholic HS, Oswego, Ill.) had headers go wide in the 29th and 40th minutes, respectively and Sundberg's shot in the 44th minute sailed high. Bradford also turned away a Heather Hoffman shot in the 41st minute and the teams went to intermission with the Vikings ahead 1-0.
In the 51st minute, Dvorak stayed on side, took a feed from Sierra and beat Tuliglowski for her first collegiate goal.
The Bluejays got off six more shots the rest of the way, but never really threatened as Bradford recorded four more saves. Augustana freshman
Grace Sigler (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) took a pair of shots in the final six minutes, but one was blocked and Tuliglowski stopped the other.
Bradford finished with eight saves in posting her second straight shutout and has now played 198 minutes since surrendering her last goal. The defense in front of her was led by sophomore
Anna Fank (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.), Wendell and sophomore
Hannah Rossi (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.).
Tuliglowski had two saves for the visitors.
Elmhurst had advantages of 11-9 in shots, 8-4 in shots on goal and 10-4 in corners, but was unable to put together a serious scoring threat in the match.
On Saturday, September 30, Augustana hosts Lawrence in a non-conference match at Thorson-Lucken Field. Kickoff between the two sides—both nicknamed Vikings—is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
