Sophomore Michael Peters strikes his game-tying goal in the first half
of Augustana's 3-2 overtime loss to Elmhurst Wednesday at Thorson-
Lucken Field.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Lucas Wetherby headed in a free kick by Zach Clements 43 seconds into overtime Wednesday to lift Elmhurst to a 3-2 win over Augustana at Thorson-Lucken Field. The match was the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin opener for both teams and left the Vikings 0-6-1 on the year, while the Bluejays improved to 5-2-2.

It took Elmhurst barely a minute to get on the board. Matt McNamara used an Angel Carreno assist to tally his second goal of the season and the visitors led 1-0.

That would be the only shot for the Bluejays through the first 28 minutes, as Augustana picked up the pace. After coming away empty on its first four shots, including two on which Elmhurst keeper Nick King recorded saves, sophomore Michael Peters (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) tallied the equalizer in the 39th minute. The goal was the first of the season for the Vikings' leading returning scorer from a year ago.

Each team got off one more shot in the opening half, but they went to the locker room tied at 1-1. Augustana outshot the Bluejays 7-4 in the first 90 minutes.

After a total of 12 shots between the sides—eight by Elmhurst and four for the Vikings—in the first 41 minutes of the second half, the Bluejays took the lead at the 86-minute mark. Clements headed in Luke Deel's free kick from near midfield to make it 2-1.

Less than two minutes later, Elmhurst was called for a foul, giving Augustana a free kick opportunity from just outside the 18-yard box. Sophomore Matthew Allen (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) bent his kick around the Bluejay wall and just inside the upper right corner for the equalizer and a minute and 14 seconds later, the sides were headed for overtime. The goal was Allen's second of the year.

A foul on the Vikings provided the chance for Clements' free kick and Wetherby's game-winner in the first minute of overtime.

Elmhurst finished with a 15-12 advantage in shots and a 9-5 edge in shots on goal. The Bluejays took six corners to one for the hosts. Augustana was called for 14 fouls and Elmhurst eight.

Sophomore Jeremy Klaber (Stevenson HS, Buffalo Grove, Ill.) recorded six saves, while King had three for the Bluejays.

On Saturday, September 30, the Vikings are back on the road, taking on Coe in Cedar Rapids, Iowa with kickoff scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
