ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana battled unbeaten Simpson to a 2-2 tie Sunday afternoon at Thorson-Lucken Field. The Vikings improved to 0-5-1 on the year while putting the first blemish on the Storm's (8-0-1) otherwise perfect season to date.

The hosts took their first lead of the day after Simpson was called for a handball in the box in the 23rd minute. Junior Jack McKearnan (Warren HS, Gurnee, Ill.) converted the penalty kick and Augustana led 1-0. The goal was McKearnan's first of the season.

In the 37th minute, the Storm had a chance to return the favor, but sophomore keeper Jeremy Klaber (Stevenson HS, Buffalo Grove, Ill.) turned away a penalty kick by Simpson's Nick Joslyn. Enrique Idehen was there for a follow-up attempt, but Klaber made the save on that as well.

The Storm's Justin Gilmore had his shot deflect off the left post in the 40th minute and Klaber made a save on a Blake Robinson shot in the 42nd to keep his team ahead at intermission.

In minute 47, Tanner Alderson played a ball ahead to Garrett Pochop, who tallied the equalizer for Simpson. The goal was the eighth of the season for Pochop.

The Vikings went back up 2-1 in the 60th minute. Senior Victor Velazquez (Larkin HS, Elgin, Ill.) took a pass from sophomore Matthew Allen (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) and worked the left side, eventually slipping his shot under Storm keeper Jake Potratz and inside the right post for his first goal of the season.

Simpson tied it again in the 77th minute. Ian Dean chased down a cross from Colin Robinson and tallied his second goal of the year. Each keeper stopped one shot in the final 13 minutes of regulation and the sides went to overtime.

Each side got off five shots in the extra sessions, but none were put on frame and the match ended deadlocked.

The Storm finished with advantages of 24-14 in shots and 13-5 in shots on goal. Simpson also had a 7-6 edge in corners. Klaber came up big, recording 11 saves, while Potratz had three for the visitors.

Coach Mick Regan's Vikings open CCIW play at Thorson-Lucken Field on Wednesday, September 27. Augustana hosts Elmhurst, with the men scheduled for 7:30 p.m. as the second half of a women's/men's doubleheader.
